Simple NH. Back in them east woods you gotta cover 'bout a mile to git as far away as yer gonna get from roads an' other pilgrims. If you gotta drag a deer (cause there ain't no more REAL big game), you might git by fer 30 or so years afor you croak with a heart attack; there ain't a whole lot more than big hills anywhar back there. Out here in gods country, a mile in won't even git you away from the ATVs. There ain't much game there, cause soon as the pilgrims start festerin' like maggots around the roads, all the game heads into the high country where its peaceful and COOL. Real big game (elk, moose, bear) are made to survive in -30 weather, so warm temperatures an' all thet fat, hide an' hair don't mix good. Now only fools walk into the high country to hunt. You ain't gonna carry much meat on yer back, an' even if you bone it an' pack a load out, you got several more loads and 20 miles of switchbacks still ahead of you. Next, elk ain't deer. You spook a rabbit deer, he might run 500 yards, git into some brush, an' lay low til the danger passes. Spook an elk, an' he might run 10 miles over a mountain range. You gonna walk after him or try to head him off on foot?
So there you are. Good reasons only pink assed mama's boys walk into the mountings after game. The rescue helicopters run ever day durin' the season to fetch 'em back when their feet git to be hamburger or they fall off a rock an' crack their bean. Asides that, horses an' mules are better company than 95% of the humans we got on this planet.
The way the roads are closed off around here anymore, I don't know if I could even walk as far as I used to drive before unloading. You can't hunt if your ass is dragging from crawling a mountain for ten miles before you really start to hunt.

Thet's right! If the good lord wanted us to walk, he wouldn't have gave us fine mules an' a appetite fer fresh meat! Hunters thet walk are blasphemous, unrefined, satan woreshipers!

NH,
Learn how to ride, rent a horse or two, go back and hunt. Then pay some other packer to go get your meat. Ain't cheap but at least you've got a better chance of gettin an elk, and enjoyin your hunt. That's were I'm headed.
