Ok guys , how does this sound for hunting this year. I have decided to use three rifles tis year for Eastern Oregon mule deer and Elk. For deer I will take my model 7,308 with a VXII 2x7 and shoot a speer 150 grain Flat base at 2840 fps. I will back it up with my Model 70 30,06 with a Nikkon monarch 3x9 165 grain speer Flat base at the same 2850 speed. When I go after Elk I will take the 06 with the same load and my .338 win mag model 70 with VXIII 3x10. load with 225 grain bullets at 2850fps. All thes Loads are very accurate in the named rifle and when all Loads are zeroed at 200 the drop at 300 is 8 to 9 inches and at 400 -23 to 24. The only thing that changes is the Energy !

sounds like it will work out fine.

when i hunt an area where there is a very good chance of being in timber (black hills where an extremely looong shot is 40 yards), my backup rifle is a 30-30 -  compact, handy, light, and ample power for deer.

for most of my hunting, though, i just pull whatever 2 flatshooters out of the cabinet if i am traveling 2 hours or more... if i am close to home, just the 7 mag goes, the rest just sit it out...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Dakotasin,

I like the 30/30 too but there is not one in my safe at this time, I have owned 3 or 4 pre 64 model 94s over the years and I really like shooting them. I don't thing I ever took one hunting but in the western part of the state the old 30/30 would a very logical choice, In Oregon you put in for a tag in the area you choose and if you loose out on the Draw you are stuck hunting black tail in the coast range. They are known as the toughest deer to hunt and the terrain is difficult to say the least I have taken a black tail doe but I probably hunted them for 5 or 6 years but never even saw a buck, but if I had some money in my pocket at a gun show and came across a good deal on a saddle ring carbine that just felt right in my hands I would be very tempted. ...tj3006

kinda funny...i am really into magnums. love everything about them. not a fan of the '06. not enough velocity. i'm ok w/ a 308, but find little use for it outside of a prairie dog town. but the 30-30... wouldn't be right for me to at least not have it in the cabinet. oh, it doesn't get hunted a lot...nonetheless, it is there.

Afternoon TJ3006  >>  I like the "similar trajectory" thing you have going with your rifles.  Makes it easy judging hold, no matter which one you're shouldering.  I had a similar thing going with the .264 WinMag, 7mm STW and 7.82 Warbird.  It was certainly convenient.  Good luck with your season.  >>  klallen

It is almost unAmerican not to have a rife chambered in .30-30 in your gun safe, in a gun cabinet, or on your gun rack. Come now, i am 14 and i already own 2!

TJ3006; klallen is right about the matching trajectories of the 264 and the 7mmSTW. A 160 out of the STW and a 140 out of the 264 will both have a point-blank range of almost 400 yards on an elk or moose sized target. My pet 264 load, sighted in 3" high at 100 yards is only down 7" at 400, and about 20" at 500. The STW is practically identical, and in addition, still retains 2000 ft/lb of energy at 500. But, I still have a 30-30 in my gun safe too. Regards, Eagleye.

I have a very nice STW and it has a great Leupold VXIII 4.5X14 . I probably will not use it this year cause I only get to shoot weekends and getting good with three rifles is challanging enough. I have considerd Working up a load with the sierra 160 grain hp game king and sending my scope to premier retcles and having a custom mill dot set up out to 5 or 600 yds for that specific load. I aint that good yet but I could use out to 400 till I am. I also might try the nosler acubond 160 too. If I go that rout my quirky self will probly hunt next year with the stw and its oppisate My guide gun 4570. Thats a fun gun too but I got lots of praticing to do with it. I put a williams peep on the rear and had XO build me a trittium night site for the front.    I do reall well out to about 70 yards but I got about double that before I,l hunt game with it...tj3006

Hey TJ3006  >>  I went a little lighter bullet route than EAGLEYE choose to.  All loaded with Ballistic Tips or SilverTips, I had the 120's in the .264 (3450 fps), 140's in the STW (3460 fps) and 180's in the Warbird (3420 fps).  Zeroed at 300, there wasn't more than 0.1" difference from 0 to 350 yds.  They're within 0.3" of each other at 400 yds. and 0.6" at 500 yds.  Drift out to 400 yds. wasn't more than 0.4" difference either.  For all of my practical deer hunting purposes, these loads in these rifles were identically.  And once they got to the game, each load has proven to perform similarly, as well.

Have since broken this little trio up replacing the STW with the RUM and moving to the 200 gr. AccuBond's in the Warbird.  Was just neat how they all came into line like they did.  Later.  >>  klallen

Klallen,  I remember when you rebareld your stw. That model 70was a rather uncommon version (cant remember the name) Burned up lots of powder since  I then I,ll bet. The 7 rum is a great cartridge too. Hell Its the stw + about 150fps. You must shoot alot more than I do .I like and respect you ultra long rangr guys but unless I get more chance to shoot I goota keep my game shots to about 400 and that might be streaching it a little. My hunting partner had shoulder surgery, and is left handed I hope he decides to go to non magnums to save his shoulder He has a pre 64 264 And I would buy him a left handed model 70 in 06 or 270 or what ever he wanted to get my paws on that thing. Its a little beat up cosmeticly so its not worth what it could be but I look at like it was hally berry.!
