I had a couple of non-lever centerfires that I've been planning on moving them for something else but decided to see if I could find someone locally that would trade me a 99 chambered in 308 Win for one of the rifles I wanted to get rid of. I found a guy that was traveling to South Texas over the Thanksgiving weekend, so we met and traded. It is an '70s E with the birch stock, but it is a super shooter.
The picture shows it wearing a Weaver K4, but I put a new production Weaver Classic V 2-7X32 on it as the accuracy of the rifle warranted it. I might try to remove the varnish or whatever Savage applied to the blond wood and see if the birch will accept a walnut stain. Other than that, the rifle is good to go. I'm shooting the Speer #2035 165-grain HCSP out of it with H100V. The load workup was quick, with the last few shots at 100 yards. I feel that I dropped the one-shot, but I'm sure this rifle has promise. I've been busy with deer hunting with other rifles but will get back on my range this week and finish the complete work up with the rifle. Shooting the 99 gave me a hankering for a 99 chambered in 300 Savage. I bought one from Williams Gun Sight a couple of days ago. It has a Weaver K3 on it which I feel is a bonus. This all started with the thought of buying a Henry Long Ranger chambered in 308 Win to replace a bolt rifle chambered in the same. The Henry is available locally but a bit pricey; however, I don't care too much for the Browning like look. I thought that I might be able to get a Savage 99 for half the price of that rifle. Ended up with two Savages so I see that as a win! |

nice rifles, the 300 savage is a winner to.
Now you need one in 250-3000 Savage for some Texas varmint shooting.

The Savage 99....a rifle ahead of it's time when it was introduced by Arthur Savage so long ago.
Nice pick ups for your shooting battery.

I have had 375 win in a contender and in a Marlin 336. Great cartridge, 38-55 updated. Works good on deer and wild boar. easy to reload for. There could be better bullets; i've use 270 gr, 220 gr, and 200 gr lradcast.
Not mny 375 model 99s around. If you find 2 let me know I could use one.

With the cost of the Savage "Saddle Rifle," we could split ownership, ship it back and forth and still come out ahead! |

If we did it that way, I'd end up wearing it out on our feral hogs. It would be done!

No ,I think it was done with a machine. I did find that some of the later 99's had bear and deer engravings. I did redo the stock though . But the detail of the fish and the bear fur ,I don't think the could get it that good back in the day . I don't know though it's a mystery .

Nice rifles Ranch Dog.
I have been not really looking, but keeping an eye open for a 99 Savage in 250-3000. Every one I have seen has been way more expensive than I wanted to pay. Wing master

Thank you! There are none listed now, but you might keep an eye on Williams Gun Sight, I found some great buys from that source. At the end of the year in 1999, the Farmer's Co-Op boss asked me if I wanted all the ammo they had as with the start of 2000, they were not going to carry it anymore. I started passing the various boxes out to those that I knew shot the different cartridges, I did not feel right selling it, and I didn't need any of it as I'm a hardcore handloader and always have all my brass needs covered. There was a sealed case of 250 Savage ammo. It took me a bit, but I found a lady that lived on a ranch that shot a 99. Lucky for her she was just about out. The cartridge has made a comeback, but at that time ammo here in South Texas was tough to find. She was very happy! Here are a couple of pictures of the rifle. As with every rifle I've bought from Williams, the person on the phone was very conservative in his assessment. The rife is quite the looker! |

Thanks Ranch Dog. I will check them out.
I have a Ruger Tang safety 77 RSI in 250-3000. I really like the cartridge. A few years ago Winchester made a run of brass. I bought a few hundred. That should be enough to last me until someone makes another run of brass. Wing master

Lucky for us handloaders, brass for the Savage priority cartridges are available through a couple of sources now. Hornady has the 250 & 300 Savage covered and Privi Partizan the 303 Savage although my link is to Grafs and they are currently out of stock. Norma has the 22 Hi-Power covered.
This is my favorite 250 Savage picture. A young fellow came to my ranch because he wanted to kill a good hog and he ended up with a dandy! He, along with his dad & grandfather had built him a 250 Savage from a Mauser action. |
