Figured, what good is knowing which knife to use, or which is the best, etc. etc. if you can't keep it sharp.

I have a Lansky 4 stone set - regular stones, nothin fancy.  Which I only use when I dork a blade up and need to do some re-edging.  During my stint over here in hot as hell, when will it ever cool down again land, I've found, by far the BEST touch up/Finishing tool I've ever seen.  It's the Filiment from an Industrial 4,000 Watt Sodium Nitrate light bulb.  If you can find a burnt out bulb & weasle the owner into letting you have it (EPA shits bricks when they get busted), I highly recommend busting it open & fine tuning the edges of your knives.  Best part is, no oil required.

Garou_22,

What kind of stones do you have in that lansky kit?

I've got two kit's, one's diamond, the others AR-kansas.  I also have a few other add in stones.

One thing to note is that you have to put a new edge on the blade the first time you hit it with the system because it lays a completely new edge.  I use a rough diamond to cut down fast, then I move to arkansas stones to polish it, then the fine stone to finish it.

If you don't get the first edge down you won't sharpen anything.  Sounds like that might be the problem.

RD:  They sure did, thanks alot, the fella's have really enjoyed them.

Spot:  I've a serrated ceramic, LS 120 coarse, LS 280 medium, & LS 600 fine regular stones in my kit.  I don't have a problem sharpening at all - I just use the kit to grind out nicks & chips should one occur.  for regular touch up work, the Filiment I spoke of is easier, quicker, and does a FAR better job than the fine stone in the Lansky set.  And, Yes, I generally do use the Lansky to prep. the blade before I use the filiment if it's a first time or a nick repair job.

I use a similar sharpening kit, but it has diamond stones and it's not a
Lansky. I did have a Lansky a couple of years ago, and gave it to my
hunting partner when I bought this one.

I use a series of bench stones, medium Arkansas to a hard Wyoming stone, then some ceramic rods for finish work.  When I go into the bush, I take a lil' triangular ceramic rod.  The hard stones take some getting used to and work best with water, not oil.  The ceramic rods just take any remaining burrs off.

I have both a Lanski set/ a diamond stone in if for finish work, and I have the Gatco set that is very simular.

More often than not I just use a old flat Ark. stone I have had for years and finish with the diamond stone from the lanski set.

I used to sharpen by hand, but somehow seemed to have "lost the touch".
It became more important when I got fillet knives.
I bought the Lansky diamond set and have edges on knives that have never gotten that sharp.

Mid South Shooters had the best price I could find on the Lansky set.
