I curranty have a Burris fullfield E1 4.5x 14x 42mm.
It has side perplex adjustment from 50 to 800 and beyond. Very clear glass and easy to adjust, it holds zero preictally with the heave recoil of the 8.
I'm having issues with the radical, just to much stuff.
It is SFP so the hash marks change in value as the power changes. I have a "Cheat sheet" taped to the stock for 6 and 14 power with my 200 gr 3200fps.
Shooting paper there is no problem the hashmarks work as stated, Hunting is harder.
I looked at FFP scope but there way more $$$ and better for long range paper shooting.
SO
I am now looking at a turret scope with less "stuff" in the radical. It is a SFP too.
I get one custom turret cap with my ballistics.
I'll have to use the ballistics for the 220 Sierra bullets because the Barnes may never come back.
VX-FREEDOM 4-12X40 CDS DUPLEX

What do you recommend?
I have decided I don't want a Vortex.
Burris and Leopold are my favorite scopes, Redfield to but there again can't Get'm.Thumbs UpThumbs Down

Thoughts,  the FFP has the relative thickness of the reticle change with power.  So to me the x hair is usually too thin at low power and to fat at high power.

In the early days of var scope they were all FFP, hated them.

So I suggest SFP.

And I believe that Leupolds are the best, a little more expensive, but the best.  And they have a lifetime guarantee that you can count on.

I bought an expensive top of the line Bushnell scope that had a lifetime guarantee.  It broke, Bushnell said they would give me $25 off list price on a new one.  dah

The new Redfields were Leopold clones and covered by there warrantee ( the ones made in the us anyway) But alas there not making them now. We have had first hand experience with there warrantee. OUT standing...
The scope I'm looking at is a set parallax at 150 yards.

I have dozens and dozens of VX3s and a handful of VX2s. I like them, but it seems the newer ones are not the quality of the older, pre-VX3i, models. I have a handful of European scopes, Zeiss Conquest (4), Kahles (1), Swarovski (1), Meopta (1). Without question, hands down the Swarovski is the best, clearest of them all! It is a 3-9X36 model and when you look thru it you would swear it is a 12 or 14 power it is so clear. Next would be the Zeiss and Meopta. Meopta actually made the Conquest line for Zeiss and for the money they are outstanding. You can no longer get a Conquest, but can get a Meopta Meopro at +/- $500 it is an outstanding scope. The Kahles is OK, as clear as the Zeiss, but eye relief is not good. For the money they cost, I'll stick with the Meopta and have enough left over to buy the rings/bases for the rifle. With that said, I don't have any with the dashes, dots or lines in the reticles. It always seemed too confusing to me. The Swarovski is top notch, @$750 it isn't cheap, but there are a few things left in this world where you get what you pay for, optics seem to fall in that category still. And remember the best warranty is the one you don't have to use!!

I'm also a big fan of Leupold. I've had Vortex and Burris that I had to send in for warranty and the warranty was great but I've never sent in a Leupold. The last thing I want is a broken scope on a hunt. No matter how good the warranty is.

The VX-3HD series are really good scopes. Pretty expensive to my budget but I don't think you would regret it once the sticker price wore off.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

I have a Leupold  VX3I-LRP on my Swede. It's a solid scope. It tracks and returns to zero perfectly. It's kinda big and heavy but it's by far the best scope I have. It does have the little hash marks only on the bottom of the reticle but it's not so busy that it bothers me.

I like every Leupold I have. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Just a thought.

Most people buy more Xs than they need (me too).
I've got 9 leupolds, some 3-9x.  Over the years I've found that most of my kills are on 4 or6x.

Actually, I've got  4  2-7x and one 1-4x  and these are my favorites.  One 5-20x which I seldom use.

The parallax is adjustable, the focus is not.  a 150 yd focus fixed scope is no problem from 100-1000 yards.  I will be a little fuzzy under 100yds.  not a problem for you out west, but not good for squirrels at 30 yds.

Even out here anything over 12/14 power is useless for actual hunting. Dust, moisture, and shaking, make it imposable. 90% of my shots are on 6 power 'cept when I'm prairie dog shooting there WAY to small at 200 yards for 6.
Most scopes are "Set" for the highest power. Both my Burris scope are Parallax adjustable but I almost always have it set on 200 yards. the only time I mess with it is when shooting paper over 500 yards.
I do use 12/14 for " scoping" so I can see horn points, but generally turn it back down for actual shooting. Nothing more embracing then stepping over a ridge and catching a big deer/elk at 30 yards and your still up on high-power. OR a charging grizzly bear.......

VX-FREEDOM 4-12X40 CDS DUPLEX
OK I got it. The boy and I Leveled the gun scope and fixed the eye relief to my tired old eyes, Put the bore sighter on it.
All looks very promising.
I have some factory ammo the gun came with, it came with 5 boxes asst weights. I'm down to the 175s.
All I need it for is to get it on paper and not cost $80.
As you know I use 200 gr Barnes as my primary load, but alas I can't get them as of late. SOOO
My back up load is Sierra  220, the Barnes will out shoot them a little, at 500 yards I can get a 5" group with the Barnes and only get like a 10/11" out of the Sierras.
Both are fast 3200 fps ,200 gr and 3100 fps 220s.
I got some "hammer" 200 (197) gr and some Spear 200s to test.
I don't know what I'll end up with, the Barnes are $1.10, the Hammers are $1.97, Spear are under a dollar and the Sierra are under $.50 EACH!
The 8 is not a high Volume gun so price is not as important as performance and availability.
When I order the CDS Dial with all the pertinent information I want it to be the same from here on out.

Now where do I sight it in to? 100 yards, 200, Point blank ( 232 with the Barnes) to make the cap work right?

sounds like a good decision, Leupold.

The CDS cap allows you to sight it in at any range (while setting the cds range to be equal to your real range and it will be sighted in there, and all other ranges).

But the best sighting place is at the range you expect to hunt.  that way you will have zero error at that range; and any error will be at another range.   All CDS dial have some range error.  one CDS dial works for a number of loads/cartridges; I think they only make 45 different sizes that fit 223 up to 45-70.  they are not perfect; but close.

If I send in all the vitals they match cap to them.
Bullet coefficient, average altitude, average temp, average Barometric presser, bullet type/brand, caliber, weight, and average actual speed.
By using the center cross hears the focal plane thing is taken out too, so no mater the "Power" setting it is the same. I get one free and any others, for different loads are $80.Clap

I also like Leupolds but I have sent more in for repair or replacement than all the others combined. Agreed great warranty but too bad you may have to use it often.

Welcome back rick, nice to see you here.

Got 12 Leupolds, some 40 years old.  Never a problem; don't know how they honor their warranty as I've never used it.

How is the weather in Texas???
