Seems like every 15-20 years my boat trailer need new brakes, 4 drums.

Actually few miles, just time seems to be the culprit.

Ordered new parts for rebuilds of foundation braking mechanism.
The original steel brake line ran thru the box-beam frame.  Can't replace that, so I'm going with rubber reenforced .DOT approved flexible hose type.  anyone use that stuff

Replace the steel ones with nickle-cupro. Bends easy enough and with a second pair of eyes, just give it the wiggle and jiggle til you hit the hole right. The rubbers wear out fast and degrade. One good mash of the pedal and goodbye brakes. Just remember the grommets will need replaced after you run them through the frame. Use the braided line extension from the brake drum to the new line poking out of the frame....easy peasy.......if you use a loader and lean the trailer a bit say.....vertical. I recommend taping the fitting to the end of the line before attempting to feed it. Protects the fitting and the end of the line both from damage and getting hung up.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

rebuilt 3 wheels, new cylinders, adjusters, pads. It needed a  short hose, and found one on-line at trailer specialty place I usually shop.  cost was $15, but shipping was $40 for fedex.  ouch.

sort of want to finish the project, bleed brakes and pull boat for winter this weekend.  so shippmg was a problem.  Well, found one one e-bay, same price and free shipment in 2 day via Fed-ex.  STRANGR thing is it is the same company that wanted $40 more for shipping IF I bought it thru there own site!!!!!

It arrives today....saved $0 for the identical part, same seller?

Well, had one brake hung up.  Removed the wheel, things fel out, shoes de-laminated and rivets pulled out.  Rebilt it all, new drum.  Well, then checked another opposite side wheel, disaster.  Rebuild required.  same for all 4 brakes.  Then looked at brake lines, yep all new lines.  Well with all those wheels of, I looked close at wheels, wire brushed 31 years of rust, still looked bad.  and those 15 year old tires had some flat spots.  4 new wheels and tires.

So I wasted 3 weekends of fishing, sweat thru 15 work outfits working in the sun.  wOnce you start, it is like walking in a swamp, every spep takes you deeper into mud.

Well 3 wheekends of sweat labor,  $$780 dollars of parts, lots of wife 'suggestions....AND now  my 30 year old trailer that was worth $500 is now worth $550.

So finished last night.  Today started painting the porch on my cabin.

Is this really retirement?????

Is their a disc brake conversion for trailers?

I've never seen Disc brakes on a trailer but I have seen my share of problems with drum brakes on trailers.

Disc's would be a great upgrade.

They do make disk brakes for trailers.

Electric brakes are the fastest (both dik and drum) but are worthless if submerged, so not for boat trailers.

Drum Hydraulic are great for boats, simple low cost; but because the get submerged they can rust.  If you tow a long distance after pulling your boat out they dry.

Hrdraulic disk brakes at sealed so they don't get too wet.  also somewhat less a problem in salt water.  they work with higher hydraulic pressure.  But more costly.

I put all new drum brakes, with drums, bearings, shoes, brake lines, etc  for $780, the disk part would have been $3,000 t0 $4000 for parts.

with some care the drums will last 15+ years.....more than my boating lifetime!
