Turkey hunting is my favorite (maybe close to gophers and PDs) but with sunup getting earlier...it is killing me.
I hunt boosting birds (no rilfe allowed), so I need to be in my ground blind 1 hour before sunrise (30 minitues befor legal hour. Now my calling stations (only calling is legal, no stalking gobbling birds) are at least 45 minutes hike back in the deep woods along ridges (up-hill climb). And most are an hour and 15 minute drive. Wearing me out (but I've called in 15 birds since May 1st opener). Just not close enough for the x-bow. This means leaving at 3am, prompt. Sounds worse than duck hunting, and is taking a toll on me. No Sunday hunting, and wife has medical appointment on Monday....so I have a 2 day rest. If they hospitalize her, then my season may be over. Might get a chance to sneak out with my double 10 ga for those long bird shots (100 yards). But carring that heavy double 10ga ia also exhausting. Early morning is a young man's game.

Hear Hear!
But after 40 years of going to work at one or two am It is not as big a thing as for most. BUT you have to go to bead a seven pm. Did that for 40 years too. I see WAY more sun Ups, then Downs. The good thing about the sun getting up so early is I don't have to have the pitch black ride in the boat in the river. Sorry to hear you wife is ill.

My boys got me into chasing turkeys. It is an early morning game. I'm not very good at it, I have serious hearing loss so listening for an early morning gobble is not very productive for me, unless the boys or my buddy is with me to listen. My hunting buddy is a major turkey slayer and usually does the right thing to get one close to us (the boys mostly.) I have never pulled the trigger on one myself, if I do good, if not, that's OK...the boys like it.

Having fun is hard work. But the benefits are good.
Good luck getting a turkey. Sorry to hear about your wife. I hope she's alright. You both are in my prayers. Wing master
