Raining all the rest of this week here, Gumbo = not much hunting.
Last weekend, labor day upland bird, dove , turkey, and crane season started. A buddy and I gave it a try for sharp tail WE drove 200 miles Hit 7 BLOCK MANAGEMENT AREAS and numerous chunks of state trust, and one "Open Fields" spot. Nothing but putting miles on our boots. About 78* and very light winds mostly clear so the weather was good. Just no birds we did see 2 pheasants in farm yard and a small group of doves on the phone wires in front of the same farm yard. HUMM ?

D, Years ago I used to hunt the Sun River game range for Sharp tail. It used to be pretty fair. Haven't been there for a long time, but a couple of phone calls might get you some recent information. Much less distance than your previous 200 mile round trip. Did you guys have a dog to help you?

Game range is about the same round trip.
We only got about 50 miles from town just all over... I have shot a lot of dusky and franklin up in the Sunriver canyon over the years, never hunted sharpies. Pishkun and Willow creek reservoir can hold some but did not want to see people. NO DOGS ! YUK. Cascade and Stanford used to be very good but most is posted up now, Out where we shoot PD's IX and Geraldine have birds just did not want that big a trip.

I've taken grandson out couple times for grouse, very little sign, they must of had bad year, was pretty wet during nesting season? It's very wet/green out, for this time of year, maybe they're just spread out, more water and food available. The deer numbers are way down, except near towns and then you see quite a few. I'm not sure if it's easy pickings or just getting away from wolves? Wolves supposedly had pretty bad winter kill, losing some pretty big numbers, maybe deer will make a comeback.
