Yep he's trapping the regular flying rats. The flock has some rollers and tumblers in it, so maybe a few he caught will be.

As a teen, I use to crawl up into barn rafters at night. go along on all fours, collecting pigeons and sliding them into my shirt.
Next day, clean them and sell as "Squab" or "Cornish Game Hens"....either way I got $buck. Never remember eating them; maybe because a 1 pound frying chicken cost only 90 cents....more meat. Later, as a somewhat adult, I'd climb up under interstate bridges and get pigeons to train pointing dogs.

My Dad had barn pigeons, chickens, and a milk cow, along with plow horses, growing up in SD, during depression and war years, pigeons were "free" food. I think Grandma paid $1 or $2 for hundred chicks, every spring and they butchered the rosters. They'd start with the 1/4 fryers (game hens, just feathered out), 1/2 fryers, fryers, roasters and ant left overs and worn out hens, were canned in fall.
They lived 3 miles outside of town and Grandpa hauled livestock, grain, and booze to Chicago, along with farming. Grandpa took over the family business, when my GGD died suddenly in spring of 1929. Along with his family, Grandpa had his younger brothers and sister, to raise and mother to support. Things got tight, when probation ended, hauling just livestock, didn't pay as well. Dad would sell the pigeons, to the town kids, for a nickel, most of the time pigeons beat Dad home. We've always had pigeons, rabbits and chickens, growing up and I raised them, when kids were home. Kids used to sell the "free range" eggs to granola store, for $2-3, depending time of year, gave them a little spending money and taught responsibility. I think they got $5 for rabbits, $10 if they (I) butchered them. I didn't make them buy the feed, but they looked after them. Pic my Daughter sent me, I'm not sure if she was complaining or thanking me. |
