Mezcal is made from variety of Agave hearts, it's usually roasted/baked over wood, before crushing and fermenting/distilling. Tequila is a type of mezcal, made only from Blue Agave and not roasted/baked before fermentation. Blanco is aged less than two months, reposado is aged in oak two months to year, anejo is aged in oak over a year, extra-anejo are aged in oak, at least three years, "gold" is blanco with either colors/flavors or 100% agave which blend in a more aged one for color and taste.

Comparing Mezcal and Tequila, is similar to comparing Scotch to Canadian whiskey, smoky vs clean taste. The aging is like whiskey, blanco is like moonshine, reposado is like a Canadian/young, anejo and extra-anejo are like a well aged whiskey, mellow and having stronger barrel flavors.

You sure it's not the worm? I've never heard of anything else in mezcal.
