When you hit an animal in cover. How long do you wait before walking up to where it might have gone down?

You know what our "cover" looks like 90% of the time we see it fall and die. It all depends on how much time we have for game retrieval .

I don't like tracking, that's main reason gave up bow hunting. I try to time my shot, so bullet hits, during heart compression, they drop quicker that way.

Unlike Robert I love to track game. Most of my friends know if they have a bad tracking job to do they call me. As to how long to wait that is hard to say because each situation is different and there are a lot of variables. My general rule of thumb is an archery shot that appears to be a clean double lung shot is 30 minutes, however, depending on way to many factors to list here, I have waited as short as 5 minutes to as long as 3 or 4 hours. For rifle shots I tend to wait less time, typically about 15 minutes, again, all depends on lots of factors.

15 minutes at most....might wait a shade longer if it's a big bear. I usually have a fair idea of the terrain I hunt and how the critters will react to a hit. Nothing will haunt a true hunter more then a lost or wounded animal. A downed grouse in dry leaves is hard on the eyes. Little blood or feathers to trace, a vital shot big-game animal usually leaves a good trail to follow...usually. A fat ole bear on the other hand can truly be a challenge and a dangerous one at that.

Our "cover" is a lot like D4570's. I prefer to get them field dressed as soon as possible.
