Kids had a pug, years ago, health issues, I was always working on him. Not really built for endurance, overheated real quick. He was long lived, for smaller dog, but lots of abscesses and minor infections, to lance and treat, if you don't do your own minor work, vet bills could add up.

Like most dogs that have been breed with short/small nose they tend to have resiratory and sinus problems. Had a pug for 8 years, best dog I owned.
Your right short legs and bowed legs don't give it much walking stamina. Hoped the beagle cross might pick up the stamina issue. Might be the beagle nose would keep its head down and NOT be a good tree/squirrel dog. Stamina wise!!! My own stamina is just about like a cupcake so maybe I shouldn't think strength or endurance. Both pugs and beagles shed, so the cross probably does also? Just thinking...maybe my memories of my pug was controlling my thoughts?

My daughter has a English Setter(GSP?) mix, she's never been trained, but is both birdy and squirrely. She's a real sweetheart with the grandkids and would make a great close working dog.
I see you as more of a Brittney person myself, I've had a couple years ago, the old style, close working mellow, and great pet, before they ruined breed with trails. |

I don't get along with some people, that normally own certain types of dogs, not really the dogs fault. I tend to avoid snowflake, prissy, designer, and little yappy "dogs".

Robert, that's just terrible! Served with a good long grain rice or lo mien noodle those yappy ones taste just as good!
That was a joke... Golden retrievers are good squirrel dogs. Great with family and easily trained. Had one that loved to chase squirrels when on walks by the local campus. It was a trait I was desperately seeking to rid it of. Always had this same "where'd it go" look on its face when they ran to the back side of a tree and disappeared up it. One day she chased one up a tree and the little fella was wise to her not looking up antics and over-confidently lost it's footing from it's short branch over her head....*smack*. The poor sqirrel was grabbed up easily by her and she then had a different look on her face. It was a combination of AHAH! moment and now that I got it, what do I do with it. She slobbered on it for about 20 seconds or so before she dropped it and just looked at it. Never passed a tree she didn't look up at anymore......was more annoying then getting dragged around. |

Had a brit, field-champ. One of the best dogs I ever hunted over. Shed constantly...long thin hair; both white and brown hair so it showed on everything.. would love another one but!
I can understand getting along with Labradoodle folks!

I was going to include "stepon" dogs, but I was being kind. I thought the secret was cornstarch, makes for a crispy coating, that doesn't get soggy.
I don't really worry about dog shedding, just figured it's part of the deal. What I liked about Brittney's, they wanted to be around people, but weren't clingy, left you room to walk, without tripping over them. They also don't freak out and chew everything up, if left alone for the day or five minutes. |

I've had a few German Shorthairs. They are amazing dogs. They do shed though.
They might be a little high energy. Mine could hunt all day long, sleep all the way home and overnight and be ready to go again at sun up. They were also great with my kids when they were young. One of them, Iris, caught a squirrel in the back yard. She brought it into the house and layed it down at my sons feet and looked at him as proud as can be. She also did that many times with birds. I really miss them Wing master
