This has been a terrible winter. It's been cold, a lot of snow, and a relatively big honey do project.

Needless to say I haven't had much time to get my Swede project completely dialed in let alone shoot my truck gun.

This weekend, weather permitting, I'm planning on getting the Savage Axis in ,223 out and running some ammo through it. If I can get the scope dialed in I will probably be done for a while and just shoot it at whatever I run across that needs shootin' until I have a bunch of shot up brass to maybe try a few different loads.

Taking into consideration that the area that I live has some pretty wide open spaces, How would you set up the scope? I'm thinking maybe one or two inches high at 100 yards or maybe dead on at 200 yards.

What do you think?

Your 223 with a 22-24 inch barrel will be close to my 222Rem.

As I'm either shooting at small animals, PDs ,  groundhogs, I like to keep it about 1.25" high at 100 yards.  Kentuck windage works after that.

Generally with my max loads and 50 gr spitzer; I'm .75 high at 50 yards, 1.25 @100 , 1" high at 150, on at 180 yd, 1" LOW at two hundred and 4" low at 250 yards.  250 is probably the practical limit, especially In Wy were the wind becomes the doping factor nightmare.  BUT, in Area 17 2 years ago a week after killing as peed goat and nihilating one PD town, I shot one PD at lasered 410 yards with the 222, off Middle Prong road.

That's what I'll go with Bear.

I also witnessed a few shots at close to 400 yards with that same 222 from a ridge shooting down into a prairie dog town. Very accurate gun and a good shooter behind the scope. That was a great day in the field. I don't think I have ever seen that much wildlife in one day.

To start with, I'll be shooting Winchester 55 grain full metal jackets. I have a lot of them loaded that I loaded for blasting ammo in my AR. I loaded all that ammo and never did much "blasting" so I have a lot of it. I mean a lot. Once I get a couple hundred of them shot up I'll load some better bullets with a few different powders and see if I can find something that's accurate.

Sounds fine for blasting/target.  I like the 50 grain Hornady SX bullet, especially for flat western shooting.  Few rickochets.

I seem to remember those shots were of a breaks clif, downhill 35o  that makes the 222/223 shot very flat...like the 22-250.

That's about the angle I thought it was too. It makes quite a difference.

After looking at the forecast I decided if I was going to get out I better do it today.

I was hoping for a little better groups than I shot, but considering the ammo I was shooting I am happy with it.

After getting it on paper at the 50 yard line I moved to the 100 yard line. I had a little trouble getting the scope dialed in at 1 1/4 high because the 5 shot groups were about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. I then shot a 50 shot group figuring that I could tell where the majority of the hits were at and zero it based on that. The majority was between 1 and 2 inches high and straight above the bullseye.

It seemed to be doing better the more I shot so I shot one last 5 shot group before I left and it measured just under 1 1/2 inch.

The trigger needs more work but other than that I was pretty happy with the gun. I plan on getting out a few more times and shooting up more of the ammo that I have for the brass to load better loads. I hope I can find something that It will shoot better.

I went and sighted 223 youth axis, I got for grandson, it shot decent. I bet with better ammo yours will too.

Did you do trigger mod on yours? or just adjust it down?

Robert,

I just adjusted it down. I got it down to about 4 pounds. I didn't cut the spring.

I'm planning on getting out scouting this weekend and I usually get side tracked at a prairie dog town. I'll see how it does but when I get home i'll likely do more.
