Just bought a Model 21 generation 3 Glock, 45ACP two doublestack magazines, and Lasercast 200gr Semi Wadcutters, Brass cases, and a set of Hornady dies. any suggestions on powder, and loads? primary use will be fun plinking and target shooting, but still want enough power for self defense if needed.

Varmint;

Five grains of 700X and either a 230 grain plinker or a
225 grain HP. I really like 700X because it shoots
clean. You should be getting something in the low 800's
for velocity out a a 5" barreled 1911.

700X is actually a shotgun powder, but works well in the
.45ACP. It's a pretty fast powder though & I wouldn't go
any higher than 5.0 grains, nor lower than 4.5. It's
worked for me in both a Ruger KP90 and 1911's.

I load 5 grains of Bullseye with a 230 grain cast bullet
or jacketed bullet.

Bullseye is not as clean burning as 700x but this is a
classic load that shoots really good in my 1911.

I might try 900f's load using 700x some day, but I have
a 4 pound jug and another one about half full of
Bullseye. At 5 grains per load it might be a while
before I need powder.

Have you ever heard of the "Glock smile"? The unsupported part of the
chamber causes the case head to separate. The polygonal rifling
accumulates lead rather quickly. Add some brass that's been shot out
of a Glock a few times and a kaboom can occur. Do I reload lead in a
Glock? Yes. I also keep a close eye on the barrel and the brass I'm
using. I have a aftermarket barrel with button rifling and a fully
supported chamber. No worries or issues with that one.

Yes, I've heard of the Glock smile. I got around that one by purchasing an after market Lone Wolf barrel that fully supports the case, and allows me to shoot lead bullets in my Glock.

Wing:
Thanks for the advice, Ill definately give Bullseye a try...if I can find it, powder is really scarce around here, have to go to a Mom and Pop to special order it.

I have a Lone Wolf also just wanted to make sure u had no unwanted
surprises.

For target loads I use 3.5 bullseye. Works for me with 185, 200, &
230's.

deaddog,

Have you ever had any cycling problems with your 3.5
grain load?

On a 1911 with a dirty chamber the 185's have given me A stovepipe or
two but not many. The light recoil is worth it.

I will try 3.5 grains. Light recoil and I could stretch
out my powder by about a third.

I use 4.5gr Bullseye with 200gr SWC for my bullseye comp
guns (1911's)...been using it for many years...231 is a
cleaner powder tho but similar burn rate to Bullseye...

If you use range pick up brass....I don't remember the
brand but there is one that uses Small Pistol primers in
their .45acp cases....if you don't check and get one you
will know when the primer won't seat!

Years ago tried 3.5 gr Bullseye for 158 gr 357. As you note, it is a pretty fast powder and I was seeing a lot of stress and cracking on the cases. Found I could get better velocities with less pressure problems by going with something a bit slower.

I've been liking Vihtavuori powders the last several years. Very clean. They make a good line of powders with a variety of burn rates. (Lower the number, faster the powder.) For the 45, the N320 or N340 have worked well for me, and I use the N340 for 9mm. Fast enough for good burn given the shorter barrels, but slow enough to keep the pressures down. All just FWIW and IMHO of course.
The reason for the 2nd Amendment is so that we can keep all the others.

It was not my intention to hijack this thread with my 3.5 load...

I think you will find that 3.5 Bulleye will work just fine in a .38 special
case and shot In a .357. The .357 case has too much volume for that
small amount of powder. Unique or something that more fills the case
is a much better reduced load powder for .357's. Flush loaded full wad
cutters help also.

If VV powder was as available and cheap as Alliant we wouldn't be
having this discussion. It is soooo much cleaner and better in every
way. My last bottle of N320 was $55, more than twice what a # of
Bullseye is.

It's not a "thread hijacking." It's called "Subject Drift," and it's a fine habit. One good subject leads to another.

As for the Vih powders, yeah, they're a bit pricey. When I want to shoot lots of cheap bullets, I've been buying that TulAmmo steel case 9mm for <$160/1000. Hard to reload anything for that. When I reload, I do it for the better quality, and so I don't really mind spending a little extra on the good powder. That's just me.
The reason for the 2nd Amendment is so that we can keep all the others.
