manlicher style anything is good. FS CZ great.
nice 39 there. One year I took a 39 Marlin for my son, worked fine. Sort of like an objective focus, as shots can be 20 yards or 160+ yds. |

I was thinking about taking a 39, but I'm getting so bad with my eye site now that irons are becoming harder to use much beyond squirrel size in a tree distances. Yea I know I can scope the lever guns, but havn't gone down that road, maybe some day. Never the less, having one on the trip would be a hoot I imagine for those close critters.

Most of the affair is done on foot. Which kinda makes it a one-gun thing for the gophers. By all means bring a coyote gun if you wish to, but most land owners don't want a centerfire used near their home, so it's out for gophers. The vast majority of us have a .22long rifle for the gophers. My scope tops out at 10X & that's OK with me. Personally, I'd think about a 16X is the most that's practical in the field. Accuracy is the thing, you can't miss enough to have fun. 900F |

I was sorta thinking if I drove, to bring several 22LRs to spread the joy around some, a 17HMR, and one small cal. center fire for yotes like a 204 or 223. None of my 22LRs are scoped over 9X though.

9x is plenty. It's mil dots or your preferred hold over increment of choice
that is essential. I used a bolt my first year and found it difficult to make follow up shots. You have to be able to adjust to the bullet splash. A bolt is too slow to "walk in" the fire. 90-160 yards is the sweet spot to practice at. Shots can be danger close right at your feet or as far away as you can see them through your optics. The hard part about confirming a 300 yard shot is the range finder won't pick up a gopher at that range. You have to have a battle buddy stand where you shot from and then you walk out to the KIA and range back. Certainly different tactics can and are applied but you can't stack em high if you don't put rounds down range. |

I have an old weaver k4 with mildot reticle on a bolt gun. My 204 has ranging marks on the Leopold LR scope, don't think I'm gonna move that though to another rifle. Based on your comments DD, I may start thinking hard about re-scoping one of my 10/22's though. My most accurate CZ, the FS, has an old 4X Weaver with a German post cross hair.

Just to muddy the water even more. The mil dots will subtend the
gophers. Average gopher with a full belly is maybe 2.5" across. A mil dot at 100 yards is 3.6" across. Jump out to 300 yards and a mil dot is 10.8" effectively covering the target. After a rain or snow out there the range where hits are made is diminished significantly due to lack of bullet splash. You need that little puff of dust. On a good day when seemingly hundreds of the things are visible out in the field you can make shots with iron sights, a Tasco 3/4 inch tube scope, or even with a bow. On a cold windy day when they are sparse you'll wish you had something else. Sorry I didn't mean to hijack your thread but long range .22 shooting is a passion of mine. DD |

My S-I-L has pretty good success with his bow. He's gotten over 20 in a day, & once he got two on one arrow. SHISHKEBOB!! 900F Edited by CB900F |

Maybe I should jump down to the optics section and start a thread for advice on recommended scopes "for gophers with 22LR", and reasons why. Or have you guys already gone that path here, and I need to find it someplace?
