I was thinking about getting some plated bullets to load. Has anybody used them for target ammo? I was thinking about loading some 158 38Sp ammo at about 750 fps.
I was wanting them to be accurate at 25 yards. I have a friend that reloads and he says stay away from them. He loads a lead SWC and gets good accuracy and claims that the plated ones are not as accurate. |

I have used plated and like any bullet it all depends on the gun. Some shoot plated just fine and some do not. Are you going to get the same level of accuracy as a high quality jacketed bullet... No but most of my shooting is just me goofing off so I can trade a little accuracy for more shooting.

Just like Mt said. Gotta load for the gun. I have however had some plated projectiles,(big-bores), shoot the plated semi-wadcutters better then any of the name brand. A great deal of match ammo is plated as well, mostly for the reason of fouling, but plated none-the-less.
Sorry to hear your buddy's gun hasn't found a plated loading it likes. I have an old wheel gun in .357 that is just as finicky. It shoots all the factory stuff at 4-6 inches at 25yds. Through a box of cheapo, (3-d),RN lead into it and it shoots 1.5 at 25yds. It pretty much hates anything jacketed. I currently use it as a brush gun for small game. Federal is now producing plated match ammo.....if you wanted to check them out. Rainier .......awesome folks to deal with in person. Avoid the middle man and go direct. They will sometimes throw in a couple extra boxes when you deal direct and offer up feedback. I still owe them a few .50 cal. fridge magnets.....good reminder for me to do that.... http://www.rainierballistics.com/ 800-638-8722 Edited by jsgbearpaws1 |

Lots of the handgun plated bullets is more like a wash, thin.
If the plating isn't .004 to .008 then you will get leading and are just shooting 'colored lead'. |
