Whats the difference? How does military ammo accuracy compare
to civilian ammo in a hunting rifle? Much of a difference in accuracy in LC or federal military ammo vs the foreign brands? And anything else important that I don'y know to ask for. |

Be careful what you decide to not like. Your wife may wear one. Your son may ride one. Your daughter may bring one home. You may have to have one someday. |

Samchap;
In my mind it's kind of an apples vs oranges question. Common military ammo isn't produced with extreme accuracy in mind. I'm sure it has to meet some test parameter for accuracy, but I would be very surprised if it met the standard for good commerical ammo let alone tailored hand loads. NATO spec .223 brass has a bit smaller internal volume compared to commercial brass. Lake City is NATO spec of course. You can easily spot NATO brass because it's headstamped with a small circle with a 90 degree X in it. Looks like a miniature cross hair reticle in a scope. It's that way because it can also be used in fully automatic military firearms & the brass is a bit thicker. Consequently, you don't want to put a maximum load meant for commercial brass in a NATO case. You will most likely get into an overpressure situation. Then, military ammo as per the Geneva convention, is loaded with FMJ bullets. Hunter's, of course, want good expansion in their bullets. Then too, you want to know where the mil-spec ammo came from and how old it is. There is a possibility that it may have corrosive primers. That situation is getting to be fairly rare now days, but shouldn't be totally discounted. 900F Edited by CB900F |

My experience with commercial and military brass in the M1 30-06 was that they were comparable. And many tight 200 meter groups were shot with mil/surplus stuff.
In the 308 era, there are so many varieties of 308 NATO military loadings. I've shot mil 308 NATO that was very good. Most of my experience with mil ammo is with military reloaded (government remanufactured). Both factory and military ammo is made to spec and volume produced; so it is not as good as handloads made for your specific rifle ( bullet to lands for example). |
