I have stumbled on an opportunity to shoot a bunch of
collared dove which here in WA are an invasive species
and have no season or bag limit. Because this is
shooting pest doves around grain bins I have been
toying with the idea of using my .22 with shorts or
CCI quiets and a small blind about 50 yds away. I
figure the noise will be minimal and most of them I
will try to take with head shots, actually aim at the
base of the neck so any drift up or down will still
work.

So, I am ready to listen to comments. Am I nuts for
trying this with a .22 or is a feasible way to get as
many as I can without a lot of noise to scare the
others off?

A good air rifle, is at least, as accurate as 22 and even more quite. Ammo is much cheaper and easier to get too. Check out gamo whisper or similar type rifle. I've shot lots of pigeons, much larger than doves and pellet rifle is plenty enough. If you have chance to shoot them through back, below wing, much surer shot.

Breast them out and wrap with bacon, good eating.

That they are. I like to breast them out, place a
small piece of jalapeno and a piece of mozzarella in
the breast and then wrap with bacon (1/2 of a slice
each way) grill em and eat em.

Wrapping them with bacon and putting into a shish
kabob is also a great way to eat them.

I grew up about 40 miles north of the OK/TX border.
Opening day of dove season was a recognized holiday ;)

I've not had luck with accuracy with the sub sonic 22 rf in my rifles. My 22 mag can shoot dove heads all day long, but it cracks loud.

I guess you will have to buy a few boxes and sight them in with the ammo. Let us know.

That is what I will do. I have a couple of bolt 22s that will shoot shorts. I may give them a go to begin with. I plan on trying several different types of shorts/SS in each one and see what happens. I hope it works out well. Maybe I can ring in the New Year eating grain fed dove breast with my black eyed peas. ;)

Let us know the accuracy. I get ground hogs within a few yards of my window eating and dropping everywhere. A head shot short might do, but needs to be a brain shot. shorts just don't seem to give me that accuracy. So I go with the ultra high velocity/noise 30gr v-max 22 mag. noisy, but it is just one shot, so neighbors don't know where it came from???????

I have shot literally hundreds of them in my back yard in town. I have a Gamo I think the model is a Whisper. If my neighbors hear it, they haven't said anything.
