I never frequent this topic/thread. I'm not a Christian, but know plenty of my friends at BSB are with . So I thought you guys could answer my question.

young people have their 'stuff'. Lately I've been seeing necklaces with a small sideways cross. I asked the good looking waitress yesterday, and she said she never thought about what it meant!

Symbols always mean something, but not everyone thinks. What are the symbolical interpretations? Having studied religions extensively, I assumed it meant Christianity is dead or fallen???

Thoughts?

That's a new one for me, Bear - I am not sure.

The only thing I can think of, is that the kids like it because it "looks cool," or perhaps so that the ends of the cross can be linked to the necklace.

But in all honesty, those are just guesses.

From sidewayscrossneckless.net (yes it's out there)
I also found several other explanations on bing.

This is not really a new design since this symbol has been used for many years as seen in many flags and symbolisms in other nations. But it was just recent that a sideways cross is becoming widely used in necklaces and other jewelry types. A lot of people are wondering what the sideways cross necklace meaning really is. The cross is a highly respected symbol in Christianity because it represents Christ’s sacrifice for the human race. The use of a cross in a sideways fashion has sparked some controversies among Christians.

The popularity of a sideways cross necklace actually goes both ways. There are both positive and negative feedbacks regarding this sideways cross necklace. But even so, many people are admiring the beauty of this jewelry. The sideways cross necklaces became very popular because there were many Hollywood celebrities who worn these. When asked what the sideways cross necklace meaning is, it actually still has a connotation of Christianity to it.

Many attribute this design to the Nordic Flags like that of Finland, Sweden and Denmark where the cross is also placed horizontally along the lines of the flag. Although some Christians may find this jewelry design as offensive to their religion, not all Christians believe so. Many artists say that this is simply their artistic interpretation of faith. And people should not associate a sideways cross necklace to an upside down flag.

Another sideways cross necklace meaning is that it represents the earth. It also represents the human race and that the horizontal orientation of the cross means that the humanity is positioned right in the middle of heaven and hell. This makes it a neutral symbol. Because of this meaning, some people say that wearing a sideways cross necklace means that you are aware of your place in this existence; And that you are grounded here on earth. There are also people who believe that the sideways orientation of a necklace symbolizes Jesus Christ carrying the cross. There are really many designs to choose from so there is a lot of artistic meaning behind it. Many people will be able to find a specific style for themselves and this jewelry style can be used by anybody of any age.

It is quite puzzling how many Christians would find this type of necklace offensive when in fact the sideways cross necklace meaning is actually based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and not something that would negate the belief of Christianity. The horizontal orientation of the necklace connotes that Jesus Christ has actually risen and that the cross has already been laid down to signify that humanity has been saved. Sideway crosses are even engraved in tombstones and graves to symbolize resurrection of the soul during the coming of Judgment Day. At the end of the day, the true meaning of the sideway cross will depend on the person who is wearing it. Some people even wear it for the sense of fashion and not because they would want to preach about religion. There are many available sideway cross necklaces in different jewelry stores today. You can go for the simple ones which are simply gold or silver plated or you can go as far as crystal encrusted ones.

I just used Bing and copied the most logical one.
I was surprised to find sidewayscrossneckless.net existed, but that was source.

I think I remember the Nordic sideways cross on their flags was done because of the weather, flags were displayed inside, not on flag poles. Inside flags are hung hanging down, so the crosses were actually then correct.

Sounds like the Christian spin is there is no significance to it! Just a jeweler's design.
