26 March 2013 - Received a new "Gold Digger" metal detector by Bounty Hunter for my birthday - awesome! I've wanted one since I was 9 or 10, and my wife, Melissa, one again managed to find the perfect gift. Nothing fancy, from what I can tell, a good-for-the-money model for a beginner, and well-built. As the sun was going down, we took it out in the yard for a few minutes, just to see what we could find. Ground was still frozen beyond about 3 inches deep, but we had a lot of hits which must have been BBs from #4 son Roger's BB gun, and also these items:
That's it for the first day - we'll see what the future holds! Edited by TasunkaWitko |

We'll see if there's any interest ~ I know that I've been bitten by the bug ... this is pretty cool stuff. I should amend my comment in my opening post: I'm not sure if it is a stainless steel blade, but it is definitely not carbon steel, which is what the blade of my older SharpFinger was made of. |

You will enjoy detecting, I'm sure of it! One of the guys in our ice plant has
been doing it for years. Have gone on a couple of expiditions with him. He's found some really cool items. Funny rules about doing it on public land though. Best bet might be getting permission to look on private land with old homesteads etc. Good luck with your new hobby! |

Having a great time so far, Jeff! 28 March 2013 - Went out to explore the yard some more this evening; got to know the metal detector a little more as we found three items:
Where the disk is concerned, I think it might be an end cap off the hub of the front rim of a bicycle, or something like that, but am not sure. There are no fasteners, notches, holes, tabs or anything like that, nor are there any markings or writing on it. :?: The fishing tackle, I almost remember losing this ~ 2 or 3 years ago we were unloading the trunk of the car after fishing, and I set the rig on top of my tackle box, I think - never saw it again, until tonight! The penny; well, I guess the metal detector is starting to pay for itself already! Best part of it all: had a great time with my 10-year-old as we refined our search and digging methods a little. 29 March 2013 - Searched two areas with no significant success, but we're learning a lot more about searching, pinpointing and digging. 1. The first area was a half-mile or so southwest of town, where I lost a hunting knife that my dad gave me. No real hope of finding it; it's been almost 30 years, but I figured I would try. Found 4 buried, crushed beverage cans ranging from a fairly-well-preserved Budweiser can with a modern "pop top" to some rusted and unrecognisable non-aluminum cans that had pull tabs. 2. The second area was at my parents' place, approximately 2.5 miles southwest of town. Their property is around 20 acres or so - on a hill - and overlooks the site of an old trading post from the mid-to-late 1800s, which is about a mile away but in clear view. We've seen evidence before that the area around the post was used for campsites, plus there was homesteading in the immediate area in the early 20th century, so anything is indeed possible. In fact, my dads found an old US Government cartridge out there, just a stone's throw from the house, right close to the top of the ground. We just poked around the house a little to "get into it" before the sun went down; no real plan or expectations. We found a couple of post clips fore barbed-wire fencing and a burned-up can, but nothing else - yet. There's an old foundation nearby that was old when I was a kid, and I'm looking forward to checking it out. |
