This is NOT a soapbox thread; it's a discussion about the movie, its historical context etc. If you want to re-fight the Civil War, start your own tread.

I was able to see this tonight and was pretty impressed. I'm sure it wasn't 100% perfectly accurate, and considering the director, I am guessing that some comparisons could be drawn to today, but I found it to be well worth the price of admission, and it is one I would want to see again.

I did some more reading and from what I can tell the movie is essentially accurate - not entirely, of course, assuming some "dramatic license;" this is a movie, not a documentary, so you expect some of that. But on the whole, I think a person can definitely watch this movie with a clear conscience.

One thing that i think the movie did well was to portray Lincoln as a man. Too often there is this mental image of him as almost carved in stone - a monumental figure. But when you get down to it, he was a man and a human being, just like any of us and with the same pre-occupations as any of us. On top of these normal traits, he was also charged with a Herculean task at a time of great crisis in this nation.

There have been many crises since then, but I really can't think of any that were so fundamentally important, nor handled as well; not perfect, but considering the circumstances and what was at stake, I have a very hard time judging him in a negative way. YMMV.

To those who haven't yet seen it, I do believe that you will definitely find it to be time well spent; it really does offer an insightful picture into the man and the times, and helps to round out a very important moment in history - for me, it opened up a whole new door of "what could've beens."

For those of you who have seen it: thoughts?

Good review Ron.

My wife is a Lincoln studier, and I'm a Civil War nut; together we have probably read 200+ books on Lincoln and CW in the past 8 years.  We have vastly different opinions of Lincoln, to the extent we do not discuss him!!

We have seen the movie twice and both of us enjoyed it.  the personalities were interesting and gave as you said "a human" quality to him and others.

Unfortunately, to non-historians that don't know the positions and personalities of "others" it can be somewhat confusion as to what is politically happening.  Might want to read a little about Lincoln cabinet and prominent congressmen of the time before seeing it.

Just another bit of input on this old feller, that I think is so strange.

You guys know we moved here to Tenn. from Calif.,I went to school in San Francisco,my 2 older sons went to school in whats called Contra Costa county. Now when we moved to Tenn. Jeremy was 10 years old,so he did get quite a few years of school in here. What I think is so strange is the way the public schools in the 2 different areas differ,in the history of the man. In Cal,they painted him as the rock of the USA,we could never have made it without him, while here in the south he was painted,as a carpetbagger,a lier and a host of other names. I jusy always thought how weird, that the public school system, which we think is teaching our kids the truth,in reality is not ????  The same thing goes for the confereacy,in Cal,we never heard of half of what we heard here, like some black folks actually fought for the stars and bars, how rotten the south was treated by Lincoln.  Any thoughts on that,I mean history is the same, why would they just happen to leave out so many differant things, depending on what part of America you live in ?

I saw Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Don't have to be from the
south to not like that flick. Spoiled it for me so much I don't want to
see Lincoln.

Tika, always amazed me that blacks favor the democrat party.  The democrat were actually THE advocate of slavery and the continuation of slavery.  Republic party was started as a party to end slavery.  Lincoln the Republican freed the slaves, more or less.  And he fought the war against all political pressure, and that war made them free.

On the other hand, the Democrat Party after the war was the Party that kept the 'anti-black" attitude in the south.  they had local control and only the Union/norther republic controlled party or Lincoln/Johnson/Grant let blacks vote.  As soon as the union troops with drew, the local Democrats passed the Black Code; sort of slavery in that it had all the restrictions which the black citizen in the south suffered until the 1960 uprising.

The southern local party also started and supported the KKK.

So why are blacks supportive of the democrat part???  Only democrat that did anything for them was LBJ.  Maybe that southern education indoctrinated them???   Black minister alwasys taught the democrat ticket was the way to go, when I lived  there in the 1960.

Tika....the south is still "fighting' the civil war....that's why the difference in history on anything to do with the war...including Lincoln...I think Lincoln was fighting to preserve the UNION rather then to free the slaves as his main goal...that was a by-product of the war.All this from a non-student of Lincoln or the civil war.  I have heard it said that Abe Lincoln was born in a log cabin......... that he helped his father build.....
