So, I stumbled into the local pawn and gun shopsince the weather is bad and I didn't have to work today. Sitting on the rack was a 870 Wingmaster. I looked it over and it looked like someone had left it in a case for the last 20 or so years. The function is good, Bore looked real good, but it has a little bit of surface rust that might polish out without leaving any pits. Definately not a collector condition gun. The wood looks pretty good. Not needing another shot gun I had to justify buying this one some how. So I decided I needed a home defense shotgun. I can cut off the barrel to 18 1/2 inches, I am not real big on extended magazine tubes, cause if 5 shots isn't enough inside my house I need a better plan. Maybe some kind of pistol grip with shoulder stock...etc. So I paid the $125.00 for it and when I got home I started looking for modification ideas. Right away I found Barrel heat shields, pistol grips, picatinny rail fore ends big ol long magazine extensions, flashlight adapters, verticle fore end grips, lazer sights. Holy cow. About the only thing I didn't find is a cigarette lighter and beer holder. Now I have a headache. I think I will see how it looks after I get after it with some 0000 steel wool and a little 3 in 1 oil. I bet it will look perfect for a questionable weather bird hunting gun. I think the price was justification enough. Wing master |

I'd still cut'r down and shoot #8 bird shot for jump shooting grouse. Put the pistol grip and even a fold up stock just to make it a "Shotgun" I know where you can get a lighter and beer holder attachment maybe some LED light for shooting bats in the dark.
AND Of course I'll roll you some "Home" defense shells that will stop any Zombie or Buick... |

Just my 2 cents! Get a Poly-choke, they will cut the barrel to 22 inches over all. Works for every thing from grouse to wild boar, with ducks, geese, deer and varmints in there too. I have 3 870s with them; 12 and 20 ga. Great device and no screwing around with threaded chokes. You can mail the barrel into them; cost about $100 total.
PS for home protection you need a S&W J frame in 38!!!! |

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try to find some of those Frontier cleaning pads. Prolly cheaper than bronze wool. Then I will see how it looks. A home defense gun is not out of the question, but if it cleans up good I might leave it alone. Hey D, I bet those Buick killer loads would be real comfortable to shoot with a pistol grip. I will keep you posted. Wing master |

My two thoughts I have 870 with 21" barrel and poly-choke. If you want it for other uses beyond defense, it's a great system. For strictly a house gun, I'd either cut down barrel to 18 1/2" or buy aftermarket barrel and have two barrels. As far as the pistol grip/folding stock on shotgun, unless you need short length for use in vehicle or concealment, they are a waste. Besides being hard to shoot accurately, slower on follow up shots, you lose the leverage advantage, of a full butt stock, in a close quarter fight over gun. They do make a stock with pistol grip and full length stock, they would be advantage over straight pistol grip, I think you would give up some leverage advantage though. |

wing.......I have an 870LH for many yrs now and the only thing I really don't care for is the safety button on the trigger guard..at the back....a well built firearm for sure otherwise..I actually had it threaded for choke tubes many yrs ago too...also put a trigger shoe on it too...makes for a better pull....but the suggestion of getting another bbl and cutting it off for H/D is a good idea and the bbls are usually pretty cheap at most gun shops....U didn't say...2 3/4" or 3" chamber? Mine predates the 3" chambering.

Its a 2 3/4 inch chamber. Still raining and spitting snow today so I took it apart for a good cleaning. Except for the trigger group I had it completely apart. Cleaned some really nasty looking crud out of the inside. reassembled it and was surprised how smooth the action is. Started cleaning the barrel with 0000 steel wool. I couldn't find any of those Frontier pads locally so I went with an old reliable. I think it is going to clean up pretty good. I havn't finished the outside cleaning, but now I have a little harder descision to make. Its in better condition than I thought it would be. I am having a hard time cutting off a good barrel. I will look for a cheap barrel to cut off. I just don't want to pay more for a barrel than I paid for the whole gun. Wing master |

You should be able to find a barrel of some sort pretty cheap. A 3" or
3.5" will fit but won't work with any thing but 2 3/4 but your options for a cheap barrel to cut down are very good. Not sure what the count is but I'm sure it's over 4 million. DD |

Well, I got the barrel and action cleaned up. They both have a little freckeling on the surface, but no pitting. I am now looking for a barrel to cut off. Wing master |
