This time it's chambered in .475 Linebaugh.  I'm somewhat interested, and I know there's another coupla people here who shoot the .480 Ruger, which can be used in the Linebaugh chamber.

The two things I wanna know though are;  what's it gonna cost & is the increase in performance gonna be worth the price?  A guy should be able to get some increased velocity from the longer rifle barrel, but I suspect them loads might be a bit unsuitable for the pistol.  That's an interesting research question alright, but is it interesting enough to pay for a new #1?  On t'other side of that coin though is the question of how long is the production run gonna be?  'Cause I suspect that iff'n ya wants one, get it now.

I'd think it would be a perfectly acceptable gun for your Maine bear hunt.  It's a 100 yard heavy hitter.  But because a 400 grain bullet in that caliber has the ballistic coefficient of a brick, I think something right around that range is the max practical distance.

I was thinking I might go for a .500 Linebaugh in a ruger #1.    something magical about a 50 cal.

The linebaugh uses .510 bullets like the 50 bmg, whereas the 500 S&W uses .500 bullets.  Would be nice to get cheaper bullets from bmg components.

Bear;

Won't most .50BMG bullets be FMJ's?  Good for practice but not hunting ammo.  Now, if ya goes for the .475 I can tip you to all sorts of good places to get stuff.

I'm sure it will not kick like the 416 Weatherby or the 300 Rum with 200 grains.

Actually, staying with the topic, I was hoping for some light hunting cartridge selections in a new release Ruger, say the 30-30, 25-35, 30-40, 38-55.

I think Ruger is loosing the boat...how many ruger#1 do we need in '06 or 270?  Gun shows have dozens on tables all the time.

I believe that the 30-40 has been chambered in the Ruger #3 which of course is not now in production.
