...since I've posted, I thought I'd better re-introduce myself. I didn't get to do much hunting this year. The only spots I have left are community holes, so there's not much incentive to get too excited. I did get to take my fourteen-year old out over the holidays. He ended up shooting a little doe (65 or 70 pounds). It was all we saw the entire day. I have purchased a new revolver since last being on here. It is a stainless Ruger Vaquero 4 5/8" barrel in .357. I've only shot three cylinders through it one afternoon. Shooting at a four inch tree about 30 feet away, I soon remembered that firing a pistol accurately is a perishable skill. I didn't shoot it very well. I purchased it with money made from being in a movie this summer. It was a western filmed in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. I didn't like the gun they issued with me. When I get to be in the sequel, I'll have my own gun to shoot. Now, all I have to do is buy a holster and belt. Edited by Dirt Guy |

They had me using an Italian replica Colt in .45. I didn't like the grips on the gun. The wood panels were so thick I didn't feel like I had a good handle when I had to shoot it. Of course, I only shot it three times in one scene. I like the Vaquero much better. The name of the movie is "Cactus Creek". It is the fifth movie produced by Rick and Larry Simpson (Skeleton Creek Productions). They long for the family-friendly westerns of the earlier days of film. All of their films go straight to DVD. An earlier film, "Guns Along the Bravo" won an award at Sundance several years ago. http://skeletoncreekproductions.com/p-movies.html Rick and Larry are a pretty unique pair of brothers. Their mother was a dancer for the Zigfield Follies and their dad was a high school friend of the actor Ben Johnson. That gave them a chance to catch a bit of the acting bug. Rick and Larry have both acted in small movies and television shows (mostly western themes). Originally running a clothing store full of movie and western memorabilia, they have quit selling clothes. The store has been turned into a museum. Many of the exhibits double as movie sets when they do a film. They have a general store, a bank, a jail, a saloon, and a church with plans to add others. If you search for Skeleton Creek Productions, I believe they have just updated their website to make it more viewer friendly. It shoul also have a place to order some of their films. "Cactus Creek" includes footage shot on the narrow gauge steam train that runs between Alamosa, CO and Chama, NM. Yes, it did feel good to post here again. I may end up here a bit more often. It's not supposed to get over freezing for the next several days. Lots of shop time coming my way. Edited by Dirt Guy |

I'm about 90 miles north of OKC. I'm out of the dirt bike days. I started out on a XL100 Honda and graduated to (when he'd let me) my brother's TM250 Suzuki. My motorcycles are all street bikes: Kawasaki Voyager XII, a Honda CB250 Nighthawk, and a Vespa GTS 250. My off-roading consists of an old Honda 350 Fourtrax (used for hunting and a little trail riding near Kaw Lake near the Oklahoma/Kansas border. For playing in the dirt, I use either a D6D Cat bulldozer, 950 Cat Loader, 613 Cat scraper, #12 Cat grader, or a couple other little toys I won't bore you with.

Hey there Dirt Guy.....Rick & Dan's father's friend was........one of my favorite guys...actor Ben Johnson.
Ben Johnson was a Real CowBoy who went to Hollywood via Howard Hughes & became a REEL Cowboy. Hughes bought some horses from where ever Ben lived (Oklahoma maybe) for a movie. He needed someone to ride the train with the horses to HW. When they got there some of the horses were inadvertently stampeded & young Ben Johnson, a real cowboy, just went and rounded them up. It so impressed HH that he offered young Ben a job as wrangler for the movie set. Ben took the job and the rest is history....he made it into the movies via bit parts and kept moving up....John Wayne used him in lots of his movies as a great character actor. Yes, Ben was a great guy. Our community hosts a celebrity quail hunt every year. We were blessed with the likes of Mr. Johnson, Dub Taylor, and many others on a regular basis. If I remember correctly, his ranch (in later years) was near the town of Pawhuska, OK. On a side note, Ben's grandaughter, Mary Ann Miller was in "Cactus Creek". She is a real cowgirl as well--winning a world roping title on the Women's Pro Rodeo circuit. I got to do one of my scenes with her--it was a real treat. |

Several yrs back while in Colorado Springs we saw a parade for the Cowboy Hall of Fame and on one entry was Ben Johnson (on horseback), DubTaylor and Buck Taylor were there too.....I called out...".Hey Ben" as he road by...he looked into the crowd but never knew who called out to him. From what I have read about Ben he certainly was a Great Guy!
did I see on the movie credits for "Cactus Creek" that Buck Taylor was one of the actors????? My wife saw him down in Branson 2yrs ago, he is an artist and was there selling his art work...I think at Silver Dollar City. |

Yes, Buck was one of the "name" actors in the movie. One other noteable was cowboy singer R.W. Hampton. Buck was really interesting man to get to know. He was an alternate on one of the U.S. Olympic gymnastic teams. I believe his field of expertise was the rings. He also used to run marathons regularly. You are correct tha Buck is also a well know artist. He specializes in western themes using watercolors as his primary medium. I was honored to receive one of his limited edition paintings when we were filming at Canyon City, CO. Even though he is in his early 70's, one of Buck's passions is to get on the back of horse and rope calves. He said he ropes any chance he gets. |

my wife bought a watercolor portrait of Sam Elliot from Buck...he was quite friendly and willing to talk to the "tourists" who of course were spending $ at his booth.
