Fella’s;

I’m left handed, left master eyed, and have an uncontrollable itch to own a left handed Mannlicher stocked CZ .22 rimfire.  With the bolt on the correct side of the action you understand.  I mentioned this yen a couple of years ago on the Rimfire Central site.  Shortly thereafter a gentleman from New Zealand put up a picture of his LHB full stock to whet my appetite.  And a damn good job he did of it too.

So, to set some background, I already had an LHB CZ452 American at the time I saw the photo of the full stock.  However, I wasn’t a hundred percent happy with the American.  It preferred to be most accurate with different ammunition than what I have found works the best when shooting my favorite varmint.  As far as I could see, there were only a couple of options available to resolve both the desire for a full stock and the ammunition difference.

1.      Get the muzzle of my 452 crowned and recrowned till it shot what I wanted it to shoot, the way I wanted it to shoot it.  And, put a cork in it & wait till CZ decided to import left handed full stocks.  Or:

2.      Buy every left hand bolt 452 available in North America and test fire till finding one that shot what I wanted it to shoot, etc., etc.  And, put a cork in it, etc.

So, I compromised.  As posted on here & other sites, I simply bought every LHB American in town as they went on close out with the advent of the 455’s.  A grand total of two were obtained.  For the curious, they went at $349.99 & $319.99.  So now I own three CZ452 Americans with the bolt on the proper side of the action.  However, the guns had to prepped before the ammunition testing could be done.  Gun #1, the original, wears a Nikon Monarch 3.3-10X A/O mil-dot scope in Talley high rings.  This is the MYGAWDS gun.  Gun #2, got a Bushnell Legend 5-15X A/O mil-dot put on it, also in Talley rings.  For gun #3, I didn’t have a scope just lying around as was the case with the Bushy Legend.  However, I do have a scope I wasn’t real warm & fuzzy about on an AR.  Therefore, I stripped the AR of it’s optics & mounted the Nikon Monarch 4-12X A/O BDC on gun #3 in, you guessed it, Talley rings.  I also bought a YoDave kit & worked the triggers of two of the three guns.

Last Saturday I went to the range for the shoot off amongst the three 452’s.  All scopes were set on 10X and all guns were shot off the same rest.    Lo and behold!  One gun put the desired fodder into a group at fifty yards that could be covered with a dime.  The rest of North America, and my bank account, were safe!  Sort of.

Now that I have a barreled action that’s been proven to agree with my tastes in ammo, what’s a boy to do with all these extra guns?  Why turn one into an LHB full stock of course!  Sell t’other to help finance the project.  Although having some small experience in the world of custom guns, I can safely say that selling one 452 is just going to barely get the process started, not provide a large fraction of the necessary.

I’ll post the for sale gun in the classifieds, but provide the info here too.  It’ll be a used CZ452 left hand bolt in a new stock with the Nikon Monarch 4-12X A/O bullet drop compensating reticle on it in Talley rings.  Oh, and this gun will have the YoDave trigger too.  PM me if interested.

Now then, I’ll contact a couple of friends of mine who have been known to whittle out stocks & see who’s interested in designing one for the forthcoming Mannlicher 452.  Stock design will largely determine the barrel length, but I’d imagine that something between 415 and 480mm will be the result.  I’m undecided between the classic American type buttstock & the European hogback, but knowing that the gun’s going to have to be scoped, I imagine that the American will be the winner.  In the meantime,I think I’ll go shopping for a walnut stock blank.

CB, just wondering what the group sizes were for the rifle that you didn't like vs the group sizes  with the same rifle  and the ammo that worked best?

Also, what is your secret ammo of choice for the 22 rf?

Bear;

OK, here's the way it shook out.  The best shooter of the three becomes the new gopher gun.  The worst shooter gets the barrel chopped & becomes the full stock.  I figure cutting the barrel & a recrown, or two, will eventually produce an acceptable shooter.  The second-best gun, which is the one I shot at MYGAWDS, will produce good groups, just not with the ammo I want to use for gophers.

That ammo is Winchester PowerPoint, which is advertised to give 1280 fps with a 40 gr HP bullet.  I'd have to chrono it in each gun to see what it actually comes out the barrel at, but it's usually around 1230 - 1250 whenever I have put it over the screens.

Bear;

The new #1 gopher gun has produced one-hole five-shot targets at 50 yards.  The former, MYGAWDS, gun would do right around and inch at 50 using Federal American Eagle ammo.

The difference in terminal performance between the American Eagle 36 gr HP at roughly 100 fps less than the Winchester PowerPoint 40 grain HP, is very noticable.  That, combined with the stellar accuracy the Winchester also gives me in two other guns, made it worthwhile to do all the buying & selling involved.
