Since Ron set this one up for me, I thought I better post on it ASAP! Three Cups of Tea is very well written and grabs your attention in the introduction. You can order it from Amazon for as little as $4.00! I am only through the first chapter, but will post more when I finish! Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Coauthor Relin recounts Mortenson's efforts in fascinating detail, presenting compelling portraits of the village elders, con artists, philanthropists, mujahideen, Taliban officials, ambitious school girls and upright Muslims Mortenson met along the way. As the book moves into the post-9/11 world, Mortenson and Relin argue that the United States must fight Islamic extremism in the region through collaborative efforts to alleviate poverty and improve access to education, especially for girls. |

Hey thanks for the neat review. Since this is "your" idea, is it open to all genre's - thinking history and biography- as well?

Cook books might be better in the Food/recipes section?

i got to thinking about that, bear - the thing about that is that if that's the case with cookbooks, then hunting books should go in the hunting, fishing in fishing, political in the pf, etc. not sure what the solution is. perhaps we could have this as an area to post book discussions for books that DON'T belong in other categories, then post books that are relevant to the categories in those categories. the other solution would be to simply post book discussions here, regardless of category. if anyone has any ideas on these or any other possible options, please sing out - but let's move the discussion here, in order to not distract from this book discussion. I was just thinking we have a strong Recipes topic area now, and people with cooking interests are visiting it.

I think let ALL books run here.....each will be a new topic and the title may give a clue to books subject or make that a must for the subject line of a new topic. Anyway, if we can tell from the subject line we can choose which book reviews might interest us that way. I don't know how many charactors are allowed in the subject line. SUBJECT LINE ie: MILITARY First word = Subject First line in the post = "AMERICAN SOLDIER"-by GEN. TOMMY FRANKS 1st word(s) = Book title 2nd word(s) = Author Then go on to the reivew etc Just the view from my bookcase..... |
