Fella's;

Today, Sunday the 26th of October,  was opening day for deer & elk in the state of Montana.  At 4:30 AM the road from Great Falls to the Little Belt Mountains was a river of vehicles bound to drop da thutty-point buck this very day!  I know that the bit about watching the outbound road being a river of red is true because I've not only viewed it, I've participated in it.

However, I'm older, slower, and hopefully a bit wiser now.  So, no, no, not just no, but hell no, I did not get up at 0-dark thirty this AM.  I rolled outta bed at something around six AM, the time I normally get up.  I finallized getting my kit together & ate breakfast at 9:00 AM and left for the hunting grounds.  Got there around 10:00 AM, stopped up to the neighbor's place & said "hi" had a cup of coffee, visited a bit & took their son & headed out.  Let's say that was around 11:00 AM.  We putted around the property & saw some deer out there aways.  A plan was developed.  Long story short, three hours later, the plan shot - craps.  Oh well, it's the hunt that counts & I did get good exercise ya know.

I am, at this time, carrying one Montana "A" deer tag good for either species, either sex, and 5 "B" tags.  The B tags are good for mulie does only.  In other words, hamburger deer.  At this point in the day, they ain't no filled tag of any sort.

After the glorious plan A failed, we proceeded north towards the boundry between our land & their's.  After proceeding aways, he say's stop!  And points out deer, still in our land, hangin' in the tree line.  So I stopped & we got out and attemped to snuckulate upon them.  When I stopped, there were a couple of decent bucks to be seen.  After intensive snuckulation, deer were seen across the coulee.  Deep, steep, brushy coulee.  But, I thought I glassed a buck worth shooting at.  At around 350 yards, afternoon, low light angle, sun & deep shadow, downhill shot.  And missed.  Whereupon everybody on four legs decided to leave.  At speed.

Trudge back to the truck.  Crap!  Now I gotta clean the gun for nuthin'!  We decided to take a minor track along the side of the coulee, 'bout 80 yards from the break-over, into a gate into the neighbor's property.  Maybe get to see the same deer & get another shot ya know.  So, I'm puttin' along about 10 to 15 mph & the kid yells "STOP!" again.  I did, but I didn't see any deer.  He says they are at my 3:00 O'clock, right in the tree line with their backs to the coulee.  I open the door of the truck & finally see deer.  I assume a sitting position & glass the deer.  Buck!  Decent horns & massive body.

BANG! - flop.  We drive over.  Hoo-haw!  I can back right up to the kill, and sportsfans, it don't get any better unless it rolls right into the bed of the truck.  It's a four-point mulie buck, western style, 4 points on a side.  The rack is decent, but nothing exceptional.  The body is HUGE!  Upon field dressing him, I took out gobs of fat the size of grapefruit!  This thing was a feral hog disguised as a deer!  He had to go over 200 lbs on the hoof.  Boosting the dressed carcase into the bed of the truck was all we could do.  The neighbor kid is 25 & a good sized lad.

In any case, he's hangin' in the garage now & I'm hangin' into a six-pack in celebration.  I've now filled the "A" tag, and going elk hunting on Thursday.  And I'm hoisting one to you!

OK, forgot a coupla details.  The shot lazed 150 yards.  I used a .30-06, with a Hornady 150 grain SST bullet backed with 59 grains of IMR4350, Winchester case and CCI standard lg rifle primer.

Thats great CB900F, sounds like it was a wonderful day. Our opening day for whitetail deer general firearm season is this Saturday the 1st of November and I can relate to the traffic on the highways, it's kind of like a mass exodus around here you would think there was a hurricane about to blow in or something. Sounds like a GREAT way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon if you ask me.

Avoid the mad rush to the hills, take yourself  a little drive and hike through the timber,.. tag an' bag a decent buck & call it a day with a couple of cold ones.

SWEET !!
