Wreck on the Highway

The Louvin Brothers

O who did you say it was, Brother?
Who was it fell by the way?
When whiskey and blood ran together

Did you hear anyone pray?

REFRAIN:
I didn't hear nobody pray dear Brother
I didn't hear nobody pray
I heard the crash on the highway
But I didn't hear nobody pray

When I heard the crash on the highway
I knew what it was from the start
I went to the scene of destruction
And a picture was stamped on my heart

The whiskey and blood ran together
Mixed with glass where they lay
Death played her hand in destruction
But I didn't hear nobody pray

REFRAIN

I wish I could change this sad story
That I am now telling you
But there is no way I can change it
For somebody's life is now through

Their soul has been called by the Master
They died in a crash on the way
I heard the moans of the dying
But I didn't hear nobody pray

REFRAIN

bear -

always a difficult question when men try to guess the motives of God. i believe in free will, but i also believe that everything (including the consequences of free will) happens for a reason. the fact that we don't know that reason means little in the grand scheme of things. look at the holocaust, for example; or babies born on crack.

having said all that, if i were to interpret this song, i would opine that they died as a consequence of their reckless lifestyle. that in itself was bad, but the fact that "nobody prayed" underscores the tragedy beyond redemption.from the music i have listened to, it seems that old-time gospel-singing southerners were apt to use songs like this as a warning against sin.

or, perhaps it was just a song.....
