I jus' got back from checkin' zero on the ol' '06.  Only took 3 shots - .75" group, 2.5" high at 100 yards.  And that was off my truck's tailgate.  Holds her zero better than ever after the stock work I did 2 winters ago.  I'm thinkin' the factory crimp die also helps make the powder burn better.  I'm usin' R19 and H4831 with 180 grain bullets.  When I chronoed one of my loads, I had a 6 fps average deviation in velocity.  That is as good as I've ever got in 23 years of reloading!  Anyhoo, I'm sold on that Lee Factory Crimper.  I know, kingpin or sumbody will say I owe the accuracy to the stock work and the crimper is garbage.

 Hey Mule,

I've been thinking about that little factory crimp tool ever since they came out. I swear I'm going to order at least one of them for my .30/30 to test out and maybe retire that old taper crimp die I've been using. I really think there may be something to that even start pressure theory. There has to be something to it if factory ammo using three point collet type crimp can have pretty wide variations in other critical things and still group pretty darn good in a jillion different rifles. 6 FPS standard deviation is truly match quality ammo.AW

I don't think this a new phenomena. I've read a few articles on the subject and results are similiar. I think Lee has done tests and has data on their site.

AW -

if you want to try the lee crimp die on your .30/30 for free, shoot me a PM. i have one, but probably won't be reloading for the .30/30 until after hunting season, so you're sure welcome to use it  for a couple of months and run some tests. all i would want in return is an honest opinion on whether it improved accuracy vs a "standard" crimp or no crimp or whatever.......

well, that and my crimp die back sometime after  thanksgiving!!

Mule,

You ever tried RL-22?  my 06 loved it 58 gr if I remember right.

Do you use cast bullets in your 348?  I guess you'd have to use gas checks with them and even then have to worry about leading the bore.  Either way, there are a ton of lead bullet molds for 358 on Ebay right now.  Just wondered if I should be thinking about trying one of them.
