Well, think I'm going to try my M1 carbine on deer in NY state this fall.  shots will be close, deer will be small.

Found out my $17 carbine is worth $1,000-1500.  don't want to destroy that profit.  But I need to do some things to make it NY (commie) legal.  The 15 shot clip is a NO_NO, big time fine.  The bayonet stud has to go ( I wasn't going to bayonet a deer anyway) but this means new barrel bands..  Got all the parts.

I'd like a scope buy really no good mount, so I'm thinking to use the peep sight and existing front sight (sign needs to be removed for removal of bayonet stud).

The existing front sight is a military blade with 2 side protector ears.  some times tough to pick-up the blade from the ears.  so I'd like a fiber optic site or at least a high vis orange coating.

any thoughts??

My thought is it isn't worth the effort. It's worth a pretty good buck and the 30 carbine is marginal on deer. Why spend that much time, energy and expense just to alter it to hunt a few times in a neighboring state?

I'm with you on this one bear.
Not that you NEED to use it , but because you WANT to use it...

I've killed a lot of whitetails with my 45 cal flintlock, firinga 97 grain roundball at sub sonic velocity.
and while people think the 100  grain  Carbine round nose sheds velocity and energy fast; well that round ball has a BC of about .08.
My longest flint ball kill was 121 yard, deer went 75 foot, dead.

Like hunting with my flintlock and crosbows, I'll not take a marginal shot.

so I need a front sight that my eyes can pick-up fast in a thicket of dark branches.

I have bought a few S&W's that have a florescent orange paint on the front sight. It seems to work pretty well and can be removed easily with acitone. Also acitone doesn't hurt the bluing.

Menards has the little bottles of Testers model paint. I'm not sure if they have florescent orange or not though.

I've used Testors on some of my smiths.  I usually paint the sight with white, then a second coat of orange.  that makes it a brighter orange.

yup, bear just Paint the Front sight blade whatever color you can see best and go for it. I have some 110gr Soft point Sierra boolets to use in my .30 Carbine loads. Never used any on live game tho but certainly would be better than any of the hardball stuff.

I bought a nailpolish kit from Dollartree...It had flourescent LOOKING, yellow, green and orange nailpolish in it.  As mentioned, nailpolish remover (acetone) takes it off.

How does that Phoenix shoot?

It shoots way better than I do.
Can't use stingers and such.
I changed the spring to the heavy one but still don't use hyper velocity stuff.
It shoots Blazers great, can't shoot subsonic as they don't cycle the action. I would buy another one , the boy has the same gun in 25 auto.
