Other than contenders or alike does or can a person wildcat pistol rounds?
Maybe in a wheel gun?
Something like a 6mm/38 special.
How about a 357/45 long colt?
Cant do it? Would not gain anything?
Is a 460 a necked down 500?
How come and why not?Nuke

Got me thinkin....maybe the 460 S&W or 45-70 necked down in a revolver to 6mm. and a minimum of 8" barrel. Probably coax a 88 gr. ELDX pill close to 3k with the right load, maybe a tad more. Lotsa room for the boom and recoil would be reasonable compared to the heavies though much sharper.

....also thinking, necking down the 22 TCM to 17 would be fairly simple as well. Make a nifty little zipper!

Pretty much.

That said, a handgun is marginal for most range hunting past 50 yards in most calibers and configurations. Most. Yeah the singles can and do reach well beyond but lets face it, they are basically a short rifle with a pistol grip. The why comes in with for what end? Don't get me wrong here, when they make a forty gigawatt range plasma gun I want one.

Problem with being old, lots of stuff in your life.

You really need to look at the 256 Hawkeye.  a 357 necked down to 25 caliber.  Ruger made it in a single shot/revolver look pistol.  Lasted 1 year (1963).  But the cartridge had potential.  But back then BIG and Magnumitis were the rule.  IIRC Marlin made a lever action model 57 clip fed in 256 Hawkeye, also short lived.

I remember hearing of the fabled round but have never seen one.

hmmmm....You know....the bargain cave has a 460 smitty 6" for 499.....those barrels spin off! slap a 375 in the big case probably get a 270 grainer out to about 2500 fps in an 8" tube vs the 350-400 gr. at 1800 in the 6" That would stretch a bit flatter.

I shoot a 270 grainer out of my T/C  375W handgun.  Very accurate and gets about 2000 fps.  Unfortunayely, after 8 whitetails with it, I can't get the 270 to expand at all.  Tkat 270 gr .375 is made for the H&H mag cartridge.  The 220 gr flat nose is a better killer.

Yupp! The JD conversion is a needed boost in speed for the heavier hitters and even that is marginal.

Weatherby chased that for years. He wasn't happy with the 375 performance and reliability with heavy bullets so he started tinkering with the case, the 375 Weatherby was born. He fixed the issues with the cartridge case well enough and made it "modern" but failed to achieve any real performance or velocity gains. To fix it, the 378 case was born. Now thats a hammer! Fast, flat, accurate, and reliably expands the heavy projectiles.

I have always wondered why the tech on lighter loads for the big guns has been.....non existent. Just not exciting enough or cool enough to get the R&D money I guess.

Bottlenecked cases in a revolver are just trouble.  The 22 Jet in the Smith wheel gun is a testament to that.  In an autoloader, you fight the case length issue.  That being said, I always thought the 357 Sig had potential.

In CT, you can't hunt with deer with any handgun but a revolver so my 10mm S&W 610 gets the nod.

In MT they have to be a straight wall "Traditional " pistol bullet.
That is to qualify to hunt in Special weapons areas or seasons.
General areas and season you can use anything except a cross bow,
No restrictions of any kind.

Pistols by nature have short barrels, so you will never get the velocity of a rifle cartridge.  But with a 10 inch barrel and no cylinder, the T/C pistols really compete.

I always liked the 41 mag...sort of an in-betweener.  Again like the 325 an odd ball bullet for Americans.

Do you think the 325 WSM  would have been more popular, if they would have called it the 8mm Short Mag???

Thinkin it was more along the lines of the guys who needed the bigger then thirties already had a 338 or figured why bother when the availability isn't there or components. Like the quarter bores, just not enough available. What they need is some gun writers to extoll the values and excite the masses enough for a demand. Current batch of writers either cling to nostalgia or grab anything fast or plastic and lay on the praise.

Shot a lot of 357 Sig.  Nothing wrong with that round, short powerful. Fits in std 9mm size frames.   Slightly better than a 9mm; but it comes with some downsides.

1  basically it is a dead round.  Only Uncle Sam buys them ,   US Secret Service and Federal Air Marshals.
2  cost per box is about twice a 9mm, and ammo is hard to find.
3  recoil is greater than 9mm.

Each year we have a friendly shooting contest with some folks from: CIA, NSA, Sky Marshalls, AF intel.  Sky guy brings his Sig and lots of ammo.   Cia guy wins by a mile, NSA lady comes in second.....and Sky comes in last.  Ammo is always Federal 125 gr.  CIA fellow likes his Glock 40; but we all shoot 'supplied 357 Sig gun/ammo.
