Researchers claim to have found cure for deadly deer and elk disease

PanARMENIAN.Net - Pennsylvania sportsmen are teaming up with researchers from Louisiana State University, who claim to have found a cure to chronic wasting disease, WJAC reports.

The United Sportsmen of Pennsylvania say a doctor at LSU has identified a previously unknown bacterium that causes CWD, mainly in deer and elk, which the group says poses a devastating threat to all wildlife.

USP is raising funds for those researchers to develop on-site testing kits for hunters to test their harvest for the disease.

Within the next three years, they also plan to release vaccines to help both captive and wild deer populations.

USP is seeking to raise over $250,000 to donate to LSU for test kits and vaccine developments.

Meanwhile, officials with the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Department of Agriculture released a statement regarding the disease Monday.

They say the always-fatal brain disease has been detected in some areas of the commonwealth with increasing regularity, threatening deer and deer hunting.

In the statement, officials say they want to make it clear that decades of research have provided abundant evidence that prions, which are misfolded proteins, are the infectious agent of CWD.

They say the hypothesis is accepted by state agriculture and wildlife agencies across the country.

Officials say other theories regarding the disease have not been thoroughly researched.

I still wonder if PETA wasn't behind the CWD, since it started in captive herds and they're against both animal slavery and hunting. If it wasn't intentional, it may have crossed from cattle, to deer, as both were being studied in CO ag study, about grazing's effect on deer. The study intentionally, overgrazed a area, with cattle/sheep and then confined mule deer in high concentrations, in the same pasture/area and seeing how range and deer faired. The CWD was first reported, about same time, in same area.

As far as vaccinating wild animals, to contain and stop a disease, seems about as effective, as any other government program. Look at how effective brucellosis vaccination of Yellowstone's buffalo, has been and that herd was confined to smaller range and it was easier to get the high vaccination rate, required for any chance of success.

Sounds great! Now if only we can get humans to vaccinate we can finally quit having measles and whooping cough outbreaks!

...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

I keep waiting for smallpox to come back. Polo had largely been wiped out, but has started to make reappearance.

Enough people haven't got their "puppy" shots, that mumps, measles, and whooping cough are becoming widespread in some areas. They do recommend DPaT update, every ten years and some are advising MMR on same schedule. It's widespread enough, around here, I keep up on my shots.
