My thoughts exactly JSG. If one hits a prairie dog it really doesn't natter how big it is.

That would be fun to try, but I usually find an accurate load and stick with it. I've been shooting 165 grain Matchkings through my .308 at prairie dogs.
It might be a little overkill, but they are pretty accurate and I have a bunch of them. Wing master

If you want to try them. https://www.eabco.net/Accelerator-Type-Sabots-for-30-Caliber-Cartridges-100_p_13645.html
When Remington loaded them, they were 55gr psp and around 4,000fps in /06. They weren't that inaccurate, good enough for PDs to 300yds, but did terrible in wind. They aren't that hard on barrel, it's just plastic and they don't have much friction. After we shot up the box, went back to normal deer loads for PDs and coyotes. If you had fast twist barrel and you could use 77-90gr .224" bullets @4,000 fps, they might be useful. Edited by RobertMT - 03 January 2019 at 10:31 |

I think you're right. 5000 fps wouldn't last very long at all. 'Cides that, I bet about half the powder would burn outside the barrel.

Something along the lines of an NEF single would probably work. I would imagine a neckdown for practicality, not that it's practical. Eve a 30" chrome lined match tube would have a short life with those speeds.

That seems like a little bit of overbore. It would be interesting to see if he got the group size down.
I think I will stick with my .243 or sweed for prairie dogs and coyotes. They should handle anything bigger that I might hunt. 'Cept the .243 is a little light for elk. Wing master

Twist rate is all wrong for them, but if you have a take down and can easily swap the barrel....double duty for yotes and the big stuff?
