Anyone make there own ?
I know I should use small tank in the waterbug 'couse of weight. BUT I feel I need more range. I think 15 gallons. I plan on making one up towards the front. It's a very "Custom" shape. I'm thinking Fiberglass. Did a lot of research, looks like normal Epoxy resin and glass will not Hold ethanol gasoline. But Vinylester resin should. What do think? I've made fuel tanks in past, diesel is easier, than gas. They were always for equipment and fuel transport, so they didn't fall under DOT vehicle standards, which have to certified and meet fed standards.
You have to keep in mind, your fuel tank must meet EPA and Coast Guard regulations and be certified, to be accepted. Getting tank certified, would cost far too much. Almost no current boat builders, make their own tanks, for smaller boats at least. It far cheaper to source premade/certified ones. Having ran many boats, where weight mattered, two small tanks, for balance, works better than larger single tank. I would check into "portable" tanks, of under 12 gallons, as they're lower cost, than permanent tanks, and have less regs to comply with. I would go with tank, like this 12 gallon one and add 6 gallon one, (Or two 6gallon or two 9gallon) if required. I would mount it, with hold down straps and fuel it in boat, even though regs say it must be remove for filling. (full 12gallon tank weigh 80+lbs) Two 6 or 9 gallon tanks, would give more flexibility in mounting and balancing boat. https://www.wholesalemarine.com/attwood-12-gallon-epa-approved-fuel-tank.html |

Have you ever been checked by the EPA or coast guard ?
Even the few times I have been checked by our FWP gestapo, they never looked at registration or my fuel tank... the boat is already licensed and "certified" and checked through the FWP, and DMV. The tank will be in the center of the boat between the cats. No room for extra tanks or cans in the boat.

I've been checked by Coast Guard, "courtesy inspection", (but they will just do official inspection, if you turn down "courtesy inspection"), many times, at least once per year until, you have that years inspection sticker in window.
They always, check for blower (for fuel tank), bilge pump or bailing device, signaling device (sight and sound (night time if over certain length)), rope and anchor, fire extinguisher, life jackets, throwable, paddle and registration. I'm sure there's more I've forgetting, saltwater has few extra requirements and above ~20something feet, you have few extra regs. Now that they have muzzle certification/cleaning stations, you can be they'll be doing more courtesy inspections, which they'll still write ticket, for any major safety issues or if they feel like it, minor stuff, sometimes, they let slide, with warning/fix it ticket. By the way you do NOT need a paddle.
I went through that with my 18' jet, It is SUGGESTED you have one. I wanted to use two long handled shovels and not have a paddle. The FWP and Coast guard both said it is a suggestion. Where to you boat that I don't. ONLY place I know of that there MAY be a CG is fort peck. Never seen a CG sticker in any MT boat window

They have Coast Guard Auxiliary on Flathead Lake, they patrol in the summer season and they visit other area lakes, doing boater safety outreach. Just like "real" coast guard, they have enforcement powers. They also work with ICE on Lake Koocanusa, doing enforcement and safety inspection both. I'm surprised you haven't run into them, http://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=130-10-03
I wasn't aware paddles were no longer required, just suggested equipment. Like I said, saltwater, States and larger rivers have different requirements. Boats over 26 foot also have additional requirements, along with the saltwater. I've always just did what Dad taught was required, he's mainly done saltwater, in 28 foot boat, for last 40 yrs, so that's what I've known. http://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=V-DEPT&category=virtual-safety-check Edited by RobertMT - 02 January 2018 at 15:51 |

What about an aluminum tank? I'm betting your guy that welded your aluminum could make one about any shape you wanted.
These guys make custom tanks too. Wing master

I would not recommend making any tank out of resins. Fuel is the enemy and the sunlight enhances that effect dramatically. If it was me, I'ld hit the local junk yards and grab a pair of small fuel tanks from economy cars. Most of them have a flat welded rib that can be used as a support across frame rails. A pair of added straps to hold them up covered in rubber roof seam tape and your in business. Make a flat box to fit over them and you can haul your game and supplies on top then. Nice thing is they will already have a fill tube and a sending unit you won't have to fashion.

Have you thought of 4" Sch 40 plastic pipe, maybe 2 of them running front to back between the cats? angled slightly downhill for better feed.
for long range in my small tri-hull (14") I carried 3 6 gallon red plastic , and weight distributed them. They lasted 50+ years, sold the boat but kept one and still use it. tube type: easy to have one welded with al pipe. Edited by BEAR - 03 January 2018 at 08:11 |

We used to use round stainless tanks in drag boats in 70s, just make sure they have top fuel pickup, that's been required since 80s. When I got out of it, guys where switching to big aluminum motors, even in "economy" classes. Last boat, I had motor from Rex Hutchison, it had more power than my boat could handle. He passed away last fall, he built a lot of motors, in his time.
There's nothing like 130mph in 1/4 on water, except now they break 270mph, in top classes. You basically flying boat, with only prop and rudder in water, until something goes wrong, if you dip edge, they come apart rather quickly. |

I found a new steel tank that with a little "Body Work" on the tank, I think I can make it work.
It's for a jeep Cj. 15 gal $48 and free shipping. That's cheaper then I can make it.

Steel.
11 pounds + 94 pounds of gas. 105 pounds ... looks like the wife will have to stay on the shore. But I think I need that much, if it's to muck I'll only fill it part way.

Sounds good and safe.
Did the bug engine have an electric fuel pump? Was it in the gas tank?

No they came with a mechanical fuel pump.
I have already covered the mounting point and removed all the components of the pump. I already have an external High flow low presser 12 volt Fuel pump. I can use it if I up grade to a double carb system too. It will pull gas from a gas can on the ground up to the carb about 6 feet off the ground, it will draw gas from a top access pipe from the tank. I'll vent the tank with a pipe that runs to the Top of the prop cage.

Just for accessibility. May I suggest tank foam? Helps to keep the sloshing around from happening.
