Goatlocker;

Usually after the first of the new year the MYGAWDS
planning thread opens.

Needed: One .22lr rifle good to MOA at 100 yards & two
bricks of ammo for it. Clothing for a wide variety of
weather conditions. Spring blizzard, Yellowstone blowing
up, 100 (possibly +) degree sunshine, or most of them
over 3 -5 days. A fully charged credit card. We hold
the event in conjunction with the spring gun show because
of variable weather. The show is usually around 600
tables & people have been known to be tempted by some of
the offerings.

Also needed is the ability to imbibe the
alcoholic spirit of choice and tell whoppers about how
your day went. We have had people swear on a stack of
empty bottles, or cans, or bota bags, or whatever, that
they personally survived a charge of vampire gophers!

I don't remember what year I did that.

Two bricks of ammo?

The day you boyz went to town for lunch and left me to fend off the
beasts by myself I went through 500 in just over an hour!

Was close to calling "Broken Arrow"

I remember that day well DD. The body count was high.

Goatlocker,

I live in Gillette. Good antelope hunting here. But if you
are looking for elk it's an hour or so drive.

Lots of prairie dogs and ok mule deer numbers.

I really like the low population.

Goat, except for the cost of getting there (I fly) this is a
super low cost excursion. We stay in downtown Great Falls at a
low end Quality Inn and meals are 'rustic' except for one night
we do wine dinner.

Actually ammo costs can be the biggest expense unles an ancient
30-40 Krag or a full stock 7x57 attacks you at the gun show.
One dude even when into his pocket for a $500 piece of wood!!!!

Ok so I get the general drift of MYGAWD. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that gophers are considered non-game species and therefore I wouldn't need a hunting license right? What about the coyotes? In NC, coyote hunting is open season most areas, but there are permit requirements and no night hunting in special controlled areas where the state is trying to manage a failing red wolf population.

Bear where do you generally fly out of when heading to the MYGAWDS? I see if I fly out of RDU, the tickets are running about $700-$800. I thought about driving out for the event. I drive to west TX to deer hunt occasionally, but I think a drive at over 2,300 miles one way to Great Falls would burn up too much vacation time. I just hate to deal with airlines anymore, especially if I need to carry guns and bullets.

So you guys are shooting your .22LRs out to 100 at the gophers? Sounds like archery. I'll have to put up that gong I've been thinking about across the pasture and start practicing.

Wing master, Gillette is a part of WY I've not yet visited, but remember hearing about when I lived there. Antelope hunting is on my bucket list. From what I remember, I enjoyed antelope meat more than any other hoofed game. Is non-resident tags for antelope a lottery deal with the state dictating where you can hunt? What about prairie chickens, do you get to walk up any of those your way? The only hunting I've ever done in WY was when I was in Green River, I often borrowed a Colt single action 22LR revolver from my pop and walk the river shooting at cotton tails. I was up high on the plateau above the river one afternoon looking for rabbits up there when I started down into a coulee I'd not entered before. Well no sooner than I started down the bank than a huge jack rabbit barreled up the opposite bank. I was taken by surprise by his speed and didn't even get off a shot. Well thereafter, anytime I was in that area with the pistol, I'd try to sneak up on that jack cause he seemed to always hang out in the coulee someplace. I got off plenty of shots at him but never did connect.

Gophers no license needed.
Coyotes are open 24/7/365 In most places.
Most places you can use e calls and lights/thermal vision.
If you happen to be hunting on state Land- school trust, you need a state use permit. $10 over the counter.
Most Federal land nothing is required.
There are a few exceptions, the CMR game ranges has there own Regulations. Indian reservations have there own rules too. Most places are open for Prairie dog shooting too.
Now if you where to take the "Fur" out of state you would need a trappers license.
YES we shoot 22lr to and over 100 yards routinely, in fact cb900 does it off hand and when there running. I need at least sticks.
This year we snuck in a day just for calling coyotes. We used center fire for them. Considering we had a blizzard on the way out to call we did manage to call in 3 coyote.

Goatlocker;

I have my CZ452 zero'd at 100 yards. A couple of guys do
have witnessed gopher kills beyond 200 yards. My personal
witnessed is 170 yards, one shot cold barrel. It's my
opinion that the over 200 yarders were more in the nature
of "area supression" hits.

Which model 452 are you using 900? I assume it's scoped, what do you have for glass? Which ammo do you like for this type of long range shooting? I'm thinking my 452FS would be the ticket, or my old Kimber. Or my super-sport 10/22 carbine. Dang, I might have to drive to bring enough rifles.

Mine's a CZ452 American with a YoDave trigger mod. The
scope is a no longer in production Nikon Monarch 3.3-10X
A/O mil-dot carried in Talley rings. I also use a Turner
Saddlery 1907 pattern military sling.

The ammo this gun likes is the Winchester stock #
X22LRPP1.
That's the 40 grain, 1280 fps PowerPoint stuff. Over my
Oehler 35P chrono, it very reliably runs 1250 fps. It's
capable of excellent hunting accuracy & terrific terminal
performance.

I fly out of Cleveland or Pittsburgh, checking for best price.
this year, bought 2 months early, it was $385. I've also
driven it (2 days out, and two back). I'm retired now.

When I fly I usually check my gun case which carries rifle (s)
cleaning stuff, tripod, ammo, and as much 'stuff' that will fit.
boots and light close go in carry on which saves me $45x2 ways.

Most of us us mono-pod shooting sticks, or bi-pods, or tri-
pods.

Bear, Thx, good gouge.

900F, sounds like a terrific set up on your 452. Bet you use that sling to help with long off hand shots. Will have to try and find some of those Win Dyna Pts. Tried them once a long time ago in a 10/22, but don't think I've ever run them through any of my BRNOs or CZs. They seem to like Wolf and SK best. I use Win SS out of them for squirrel hunting, but those are only so so , yet fine for the ranges I hunt generally.

Goatlocker;

Not the DynaPoints. If I remember correctly, that was an
Aussie ammunition imported by Winchester USA from
Winchester Oz.

The stuff I use is the 40 grain hollowpoint at an
advertised 1280 fps. The factory code is: X22LRPP1. I
only had to buy three CZ left hand 452 Americans before I
found one that really liked it. It was worth it to me.
Sold the second gun, used, for what I paid for it new. I
had the targets that showed it was accurate enough, but
not with the ammo I wanted to use. The third gun got
turned into a custom project. If you want to see that,
go over to RimfireCentral, CZ forum, CZ Picture gallery
page 169, post 2531.

Woaa, dude that's an amazing piece!!! Please tell me the whole story, and why didn't you post it yourself instead of Gerald putting it up? Mostly, just tell me about that project pls. Coincidentally, I'm in the works right now of getting a CZ 527 Youth carbine in .223. I've not handled it yet, but am already thinking about replacing the stock. Had thought it would be very much to my liking if I could figure a way of getting it restocked into a mannlicher style. That ought to be a nice set up, but have not began looking for someone to do the restock in earnest yet. Maybe you can refer someone. By the looks of yours, I imagine you know someone very good. I don't think I'd go quite as opulent in the wood category though cause I want to use the rifle as a coyote/get it quick out of the closet varmint gun; and I know myself well enough to know that I'd end up leaving it in the safe instead of using it for fear of scaring that magnificent wood. However, I do want something attractive, and most importantly, a correct job of inletting. Anyways, standing by to hear the details of that masterpiece you have there.

Goatlocker;

The entire story, with some pics, is over on RFC. If I
can find it, I'll let you know where/how to find it. If
I can't get that done, I can relate it on this site.

Or, if you feel like doin' a bit of travel, you could
possible meet me in the Fallston Maryland area Sun/Mon
July
17/18.

900F

P.S. Found it! Do a search for: LH Fullstock Update.
When it comes up with possibilities, you'll have to dig
back 3 or 4 pages. It's a 5 page account though &
interesting reading even if I do say so myself. Just got
done re-reading it in fact.

Wow, so 900F that story begs the question....if you had it to do all over again, would you? Makes me really start to think if I want to even try getting that carbine of mine restocked. Anyways, has that rifle now that it's finished caused all those bad memories to go away (till you reread them)?
I saw that you also have an appreciation for the 39A, and it sounded like you were gonna do a project stock on yours. Did that happen? How did it turn out if so?

Here's one of my 39As, a 1952 model:

Here's it's lil brother:

Goatlocker;

It's a family situation, a relative died & his memorial
service is the 16th. I'm told we'll then go out on the
water in the bay & scatter his ashes.

The airfare situation is such that it was much better for
me to stay thru Monday the 18th rather than fly out the
next day. So, near as I can tell, Sunday & most of
Monday are idle time for me. I leave after 7PM on
Monday.

In answer to your question if I'd do it again, oh yes I
would. It was a PIA, but worth it to me. However, if I
ever do it again, I'll make better plans & have some nuts
in the freezer to ensure performance as stated by the
provider. Do understand that I had/have the CZ fullstock
itch BAD.
