Welcome back Gerard. glad you didn't forget about us.
Except for a few of us getting older, it is the same chatty place. We are getting ready for our annual Gopher hunt and member meeting in Montana, a week after Easter. If you can make it, I'd would be glad to buy you the first round, coffee or ??? The annual event is called MYGAWDS ( Montana Yearly Gopher and Wine Dinner Society). check it out on other threads. best regards BEAR

Thanks d4570 and BEAR, it is difficult to believe that some members are all grown up now and some are much older. I used to do a lot of hunting in Africa and I owned a lot of firearms but, since being in the USA, I don't own any firearms and I do not do any hunting. Both owning firearms and hunting are very different here, but I will get around to it. BEAR, I will not get to the gopher hunt in Montana. I used to think of settling in Montana then I found that Montana is colder than Michigan in the winter and I spent three winters in Michigan. Old bones do not want to get that cold

The coldest I have ever been in South Africa was at an IPSC shoot in Bloemfontein, it got down to - 9C / 16F. In Michigan it got down to -30C / -22 F and I was driving my daughter's Prius. I bought an Audi allroad and we moved to South Carolina Even hunting to the snow line in the mountains of Cradock Eastern Cape South Africa was not as cold as in Bloemfontein, let alone - 70F. How do you get around when it is that cold? Edited by Gerard - 23 February 2019 at 13:50 |

I'm guessing the average here has been 30 oF wwith swings to -6 and 66. Just got some small piles of snow now, tenp 45 oF. I can live with this, I like the cold.
Spent weeks in AK with temps -55 and day 0 oF with 40+ mph wind. Ad 35 miles per hour on a snow machine= cold.

When I came to MI I did not know about travel bans on the roads. I wondered why the roads were so empty as I traveled from home to work and back again. When at work, I wondered why no-one turned up for work. I had a couple of snow plough drivers look at me funny while I was making my way (with difficulty) on the road driving the Prius. I hated that little car.

Good read! Wonder why the ole 270 glanced upwards like that?...2x? By the looks of the damage and penetration results, one would guess optimum would be in the 6mm/.243 arena?

The 270 bullet turned because it was too long for the twist rate of the barrel. The rifle was a 10" twist and the bullet he used was a spire point 150gr. Even a flat base jacketed lead bullet is about 1.35" long and it will give stable flight but, when it strikes and the SD changes radically, it is too late and the bullet is too long. In this particular situation one can use most any cartridge, as long as the bullet will enter the animal correctly. I am glad y'all enjoyed the read

Very good information Gerad Too many people think because they caan buy loaded ammo with extra light or extra heavy that they will work in their rifle.
The internal expansion changes are a good reason to consider FMJ/solid bullets on bigger game.
