Bible Study Verse Genesis 3:12 The man said, "The woman You put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." (NIV) Thoughts Boy, does this verse trigger thoughts. Do you remember saying something like this to your parents, a teacher, or maybe to a Game Warden? "My hunting partner told me to do it, he said it was OK." Kind of sounds like Flip Wilson's famous statement, "The devil made me do it!" Yep, good old Adam invented the oldest line ever used to shift blame to someone else for his own actions. First he tried to lay the blame at God's feet for putting the woman there, and then he blamed the woman. Wait a minute, who did God give the command to? Right again, it was given to Adam. Genesis 2:16-17 reflects, "And the Lord God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die,' "(NIV). Adam should have known better than to have eaten the fruit of the forbidden tree, but he went along with the crowd, so to speak. He did something dumb and then tried to blame everybody else for what he did. (Cliff S)
Action Point Take responsibility for your actions, good or bad. In the long run it will serve you better to admit your mistake(s) than to try to cover them up or to blame somebody else for what you did. Remember, your sins will find you out! Sportsmen's Tip of the Day Review the regulations for where you are going to be hunting or fishing and follow them. The Officer that checks you will appreciate you being familiar with game and fish laws and obeying them. |

Bible Study Verse II Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. (NKJV)
Thoughts Years ago over lunch, Cap'n Mike expressed to me that he was envious that God had put me into ministry, but not him. Very quickly I straightened him out on that one! Man, you have co-pilots in the cockpit beside you, flight attendants in the cabin behind you, and dozens of passengers and folks in far-away cities and countries, none of whom I'll ever see. You are Christ's ambassador to them. I have my people to minister to, and you have yours. Well, he packed his flight bag with some of my hunting, fishing and ladies' tracts, plus camo and ladies' Gospels of John, and soon began his ambassador work! Years later, he has presented the word of reconciliation to 100's around the US and around the world [even some Muslims!]. He is Christ's ambassador, disguised as a pilot! At home, he is an active Gideon and Board Member of my mission board. As you can see pictured above, he also actively ministers with me at sportsmen's dinners, representing SD and distributing camo Gospels. When we're ministering together, or when he tells me about a God-sighting from one of his flights, I smile and ask, Hey, didn't you used to fly airplanes for a living?
Action Point Paul tells us that every believer has been given a ministry by Jesus. It's the same, whether you preach like me, or fly a Gulf Stream jet like my friend Cap'n Mike does [pictured above]. We are both ambassadors for Christ. With other believers and unbelievers, we both have a ministry of reconciliation, carried out by sharing with them the word of reconciliation. Same job - different work uniform, different work-site, and different people. There's no pecking order with God. He is no respecter of persons. None of us are any more nor any less important than any other brother, in God's work.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day When you hunt, fish or hike, load your pockets with more than ammo and snacks. God's Great Outdoors has great camo Gospels of John. Christian Bowhunters of America carries wonderful hunting and fishing tracts. Stock up. Remember, we are Outdoor Ambassadors. |

Bible Study Verses Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. (NIV) Psalms 37:23 Stalwart walks in step with God; his path blazed by God, he's happy. (MSG) Thoughts While crossing Skull Mesa with our half Native American guide, Wayne, the trail would totally disappear for some distance. Even with the forest service map and GPS, we'd have to circle out ahead numerous times to pick up the resemblance of a trail to continue. We planned to cross over and be in Cave Creek before dark. But, these detours were crowding our time. With all the modern technology available to us, I was following the Indian home. (Wes W) Action Point Often times in life we just seem to lose our way. We try to make wise decisions, plan ahead, and use modern technology, but life just becomes uncertain. When life becomes uncertain? God is my GPS:
God directs my paths and my decisions. Sportsmen's Tip of the DayHunting, fishing, and camping are uncertain. In WY there are enough streams & lakes that I don't worry too much about extra water. But, in AZ I've learned to take extra water, sun screen, and even sun glasses. We do get wiser with age and pay attention to the unforgiving elements of creation.

Bible Study Verses 1 Peter 5:7-9 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (NIV) Thoughts I love to watch videos of animals when they "roar." Better yet, I love to be in the mountains and hear the roar first hand. Bears roar and let other bears know to keep their distance. Coyotes don't roar, but they howl and announce the nightfall and that they are going hunting. Mountain lions scream out their warning and announce their presence. In Africa, when a lion roars, every animal in the area knows to stay out of his way or risk becoming the evening meal. Here's one I don't think you'd normally consider, when the mosquito "roars" you know that he is looking for a place to land and have a meal of your blood. When a rattlesnake "roars" it makes your spine tingle and the hair on the back of your neck stand up. When you hear a hawk scream it just has a sound that shouts "wilderness!" The prey animals in the area go on alert whenever they hear a predator roar. And, like the prey animals, we humans know that we must be extra cautious when we're in an area of dangerous animals and that we must take special precautions to stay safe, especially when we hear the mosquitos roar! (Cliff S) Action Point Roaring is an interesting concept in the Bible. In today's passage we are told that Satan is roaring like a lion and is seeking something to devour or kill, specifically, that something is us! But, roaring is also used to describe how God speaks to Israel and to Christians. God roars in thunder, the sea crashing, waterfalls, and in a myriad of ways. Here's a thought, does Jesus roar that He loves us and that He is seeking us? I believe so. We call Jesus' roaring Christmas and Easter. Twice a year every year Jesus "roars" and calls us to Him. We sing Christmas carols about Jesus' birth and get up early for Easter sunrise services to see the sun "roar" that Jesus has risen and is alive! Here's the difference between God's roaring and that of Satan. We are to resist Satan's roaring and be on our guard to be sure that we don't fall prey to his evil and wicked schemes. But, when God roars, we are to listen to Him, return to Him, and seek His forgiveness, grace, and fellowship. And, remember, if you've accepted Jesus Christ into your life, when God roars, you can be sure that Satan is whimpering in the distance as he runs away! Sportsmen's Tip of the Day Know what dangerous animals are in the area where you are hunting and fishing. In my home state of Arizona we have black bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes that pose particular dangers to humans. Oh, and don't forget the scorpions, tarantulas, and the red ants. Be sure to pack food in bear proof containers AWAY from your camp and invest in a good pair of snake leggings to give yourself an edge over the venomous critters you might encounter. And, by the way, those snake leggings do a really good job of keeping cactus spines out of your legs, too. Ask me how I know! |

Bible Study Verse Leviticus 22:32 And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you. (ESV) Thoughts
One of the most important things that we learn as sportsmen is safety. No matter what type of sport we are participating in, there is usually an element of safety involved. Some of it is common-sense stuff, but most of the time there are safety components that should be learned. Someone taught you about safety in your particular sport. As a child, my Dad taught me about gun safety:
My education from my Dad went beyond sporting safety. He also took time to teach me spiritually. One of the things that he and my mother taught me was to never take the Lord's name in vain. It seems that we live in an age of ignorance when it comes to this principle. We, of course, have the normal secular culprits of television, radio, movies and other media that freely take the Lord's name in vain. But, it seems we have a lot of "Christians" who freely throw God's name around without respect to its holiness. (Josh C) Action Point It should bother us when we hear God's Holy Name used in vain. Take time to educate your children about the holiness of God's name, and be bothered when you hear someone belittle it. There are a lot of other words that can go in place of His name as a common exclamation. Find one you like and use it instead. Sportsmen's Tip of the Day As you educate your youth in the sporting hobbies that you enjoy, pass on the safety tips that you have learned and practiced yourself. Ensure that they can enjoy them for a lifetime. |

Bible Study Verse Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV) Thoughts When I first started really pursuing activities in the outdoors, I was amazed at how refreshed I came back from these events. Whether it was hiking, hunting, fishing, sitting in a blind or up in a tree, God would speak to me. Sometimes I read my Bible; at other times, a Christian book. There were points when I memorized scripture, or just sat and listened. It came to me that part of the reason for returning refreshed was that God used these outdoor moments to get a hold of my heart because I could hear Him. My daily life, like yours I'm sure, can be very busy and noisy. Noise comes in a lot of different forms, but it all has the same effect on me - trouble hearing God. Now as I approach my outdoors activities, I look forward as much to being quiet with God as I do the outdoor experience itself, simply because I anticipate meeting my Creator and having Him talk to me. (Dave M) Action Point We can't always be running off to the woods and the wild to get alone with God. We've got to figure out how to carve out time in our daily lives to listen to God's voice. It's the lifeblood of serving Christ until He returns. Sportsmen's Tip of the Day If you have a cold and you really want to keep the "peace" in the woods, get a cough muffler. That way you can cough without totally disrupting your hunting area. |

Study Verse
Psalms 91: 5 Fear nothing-not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day. (Message) Thoughts In the movie, 300, the enemy, the Persian Empire, tries to provoke fear into the outnumbered 300 by saying, "Our archers are so many, our arrows will block out the sun." I love the response of one of the 300, with laughter he responds, "Then today we fight in the shade!" What a manly, fear nothing attitude. I want to always have a quick fear nothing response that honors my God, a response that makes HIM bigger and provokes courage into those around me. (Wes W) Action Point I can more readily relate to wolves and arrows as an outdoorsman. But God is promising so much more in this story. Not just harm from the outside, but also the inside, pestilence, disease, plague and disaster. Psalms 91:7 reminds us, "Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you," (Message). Verse 10 declares, "Evil can't get close to you, harm can't get through the door," (Message). I'm choosing to believe God's promises and speak them out over my wife and grandchildren, even my tent. Verse 10 "Harm can't get through the door," (Message). It's just a choice. I'm making to speak faith building words of strength and encouragement. Sportsmen's Tip of the Day "Evil can't get close to you." But, I make sure before the wind comes up that a tree isn't leaning in my direction, or heavy rain turned into a stream will divert around it. I make mental note where the horses are tied, escape routes and line of fire in case visitors come sneaking in the night. I know my surroundings before dark and any surprises. |

Bible Verse
Malachi 2:16a "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, (NIV) Thoughts OK, I'm know that I'm going to start a firestorm with this one. Please, what follows is just MY opinion. We can agree to disagree civilly (if not, my email address is BR549@heehaw.tvshowlongago). One of my pet peeves is people shooting big game with a rifle that is too small. Yes, I know that shot placement is paramount with any caliber rifle, and yes, I know, you can kill a charging grizzly bear with a .22 if you hit him right. But, I would choose my .375 RUM for such an encounter while you go back to camp to change your clothes. (Can you go too big? Yes, if you can't handle the recoil of the rifle and put the bullet where it needs to go. But, a good muzzle brake can fix much of this. And, a gut shot animal from a poor shot is most likely going to get away no matter the size of the gun. Anyway, I digress.) Deer with a .223? Bull elk with a .243? Perhaps, if you have the discipline and marksmanship skills to ear-hole an animal at a set distance with no wind or movement of the animal, and the ethics to not take any other shot. However, for the average hunter who is going to take whatever shot he can, I consider it irresponsible and unethical to go into the field with a firearm that isn't enough (translated, energy and penetration properties), that isn't adequately suited to the animal they are pursuing. There's too many animals wounded and lost because the shooter didn't bring enough gun. True story, a friend shot a trophy class bull elk four times with a smaller caliber rifle (one that most would consider adequate). His words to me were that the elk wasn't impressed much. Fortunately, they recovered the animal in this instance. But, maybe not the next time. The bottom line? As African hunter and author Robert Ruark would say, "Use Enough Gun!" (Cliff S) Action Point I know why God hates divorce so much, because I am divorced, and I hate it. Marriage is a testimony to the world about our relationship with God. It is supposed to be for forever with someone we love and trust. But, Satan knows that divorce weakens people's trust in God making it difficult for them to trust His promise that He will never leave them nor forsake them. It can destroy the idea that they can be a part of the family of God forever. And, divorce has lasting psychological and spiritual effects on individuals. A primary psychological effect for me has been to think that I'm not good enough to be in a relationship. This harms me as a man, and as a son of God. God still loves me, divorce and all. But, just as sometimes I ask myself, why wasn't I enough for my former spouse, or, if I would marry again, might it end the same way, I can fall into the trap of thinking that I'm not enough for God. And, actually, I'm not, nor can I ever be. You see, God reached out to me before, during, and after my divorce and reminded me that His Son, Jesus, died for me and that He will never cease to love me, nor will He ever leave me, divorce and all. Now, understand, I am not advocating divorce, but it's because of what Jesus did for me that I am enough for God! My sins are forgiven and I will spend eternity with God because I have accepted Jesus' sacrifice for my sins and He is now my Lord and Savior. That is reassuring. That is "bringing enough gun!" Sportsmen's Tip of the Day Don't bring a pea-shooter unless you're shooting peas! Be responsible and match the firearm to the animal you're hunting. Yes, bullet placement is critical, but the bullet still has to have the penetration properties and the energy to get the job done. But, be aware, if you are shooting a large caliber that you are afraid of and are flinching with, go a little smaller or have a muzzle brake and a good recoil pad installed to tame down the recoil. At the end of the day, be respectful of the animal you are hunting and endeavor to make quick, clean, one-shot kills.
