Recently went into the local gunshop as I usually do when I get to town. They have the weatherby SVM(gotta love that stock?).Weatherby have cut the price from near $3000 Oz to $2200.The rem VSSF is $2100 and the VS $1700.
1)Which weapon would you take and why?
2)The next question is would you buy a weatherby rifle in a standard caliber or only in a weatherby chambering?
3) Do you think weatherby offer any advantages over remington to justify the extra cost?
Macca.

1)Which weapon would you take and why? Neither. I think the Winchester Laredo is a better platform than either of the choices. They have been discontinued but can be found with a little searching (6 on GunsAmerica.com, 1 on GunBroker.com for starters). Might be hard to track one down in Australia but I'd give it a good old fashion effort. Wished I had an extra $5500 or so. I'd snatch em all up for various projects.
2)The next question is would you buy a weatherby rifle in a standard caliber or only in a weatherby chambering? I would never buy a WBY rifle in a standard caliber. Truth be told, I do want a rifle chambered in a WBY cartridge but it will most definitely be a NON-WBY rifle.
3) Do you think weatherby offer any advantages over remington to justify the extra cost? Not just Remington, I don't think that the added cost offers increases in quality of equalled proportion over several makes of rifle.
My opinions. Chat with ya later. >> klallen

The going price in the states is $1100+ on the Single Shot and $1200+ for the magazine model. Remington VSSF's run around $750. You'll have to figure the exchange rate, the Weatherby SVM single shot is a discontinued item, seems shooters didn't like the single shot offering. It does however have a highly accurate buttoned rifled barrel on it. It will shoot with or better than a Remington any day, but costs a lot more usually. I would buy a Weatherby SVM if the price was right.

1) i would certainly go w/ the vssf because i have yet to encounter a remington rifle that won't shoot... perhaps some require a little extra work (bedding, floating, whatever), but they all are capable of shooting. also, i have a vls and it is truly a tackdriver. i wouldn't hesitate to spend the money for another, or another version of the same thing were i in the market. last reason why i would go remington is because of the custom rifle factor... when you are ready to go custom, you'll find more 'smiths who do good work w/ remingtons, and the 700 is a great platform to build from.
2) i think the weatherby design was cutting edge for its time. i think if you wanted the ultimate in a given caliber, you looked to weatherby. i also think the weatherby design has been superceded by the ultra mags (for sheer power), and the short mags (for usefulness). a few years back i was enamored w/ weatherby rifles. no longer. make mine a rem 700. weatherby's reign at the top is done.
3) i agree w/ klallen on this one. perhaps the wby is a better rifle, but i really do not believe it is as much better as the inflated price tag would lead you to believe. i think w/ wby rifles, you are paying for a lot of romance.

I like Weatherby rifles ,(who dose.nt) but I would bye the Remington. I would probably get the VLS in .308 and put a top of the line leupold tactical scope on it. All it would need is a trigger job, and it shoud be as acurate as any thing else. I love the weatherby stock but I like the laminated remington stock too. !!!

Just a thought I have 2 vls's and one savage10fp all three are extremely accurate. All had to have the triggers adjusted esp. the 700's. So all said you might look and see it a new savage with the accutriger is available in a caliber you want . You will not be disappointed and your wallet may retain a hefty feel;-).

Thanks fellas for the input.I was going to get a new rifle in 223 for my son as he is blitzing the shooting comps with my old 243 and I want it back.Unfortunately the kids computer has died and it will get a priority overide. So back to saving the pennies again.
My son shot a 97/100 at 300meters in winds that gusted to 35mph on sunday. He relegated me into second place with a 96.I shot in the stiller conditions early he shot when the wind picked up.He caused a lot of grown men to curse about beginners luck.I asked him how he choose when to shoot. He said when he fired his first shot the wind flags had just straightened and it went in the eight. So he waited till they staightened again, aimed off and put it in the nine. The next eight were in a tight little group in the 10.
I am seriously thinking of leaving him at home in future.I want to win a few more comps and he is fast becoming too good.
A very proud dad,macca.

Hey . . . don't let it go to your head NH!
Some of us "old farts" can still hold a rifle pretty steady! It's really pretty easy when you CAN'T move!
I think you are about the same age as RUTTIN/TIKKABUCK's son . . . you two should correspond. I understand he is quite a hunter.

NH my son is twelve. This is the second time he has won out of four competitions he has entered. At first I only let him shoot on practice days but he was going so well I let him compete. He won't shoot juniors he only shoots open against the men.
He has been shooting since 5.When they redid our gunlaws you have to be 12 before you can touch a weapon.Makes it hard to start kids off like we were .
They have also taken all out handguns above .40 cal.You have to get excemptions to shoot western or international handguns and that may not last.
Have a good one macca.
