RobK;

THE traditional bullet to use with the .300 Winchester magnum is one of the many versions of the 180gr made by anybody.  If it's velocity you're after, 3000 fps can be achieved without too much problem.  There are several manuals that will give you a recipe to achive that.

The downside is recoil.  For instance, many .30-06's are perfectly capable of throwing a 150 grain bullet at 3000 fps, though it's right on the top end of the performance envelope for that cartridge.  When you not only bump the bullet weight by 30 grain, but include the increase in charge weight, you get more recoil.  Most folks report substantially more recoil.

If you're not going too be hunting in an area where the long shot is the norm, I'd consider backing off the powder charge to give something around 2800 fps.  Your shoulder will most likely thank you, and the venison will be just as dead but probably not as bloodshot.

i've had great luck with 165's running at maximum honk w/ rl-22 in my 300. i've also had good results w/ h-4831. i use magnum primers - 75 or 80 grains of powder is a lot of powder to get lit afire.

I run 70grs of IMR 4350 with 165s or with 180s(max load).  I prefer accubonds or partitions over BT though.  I load them as long as I can and with mag primers of course.
