Lots of hiking not much else. A few does and smaller bucks. Mtns are steeper again this year. I enjoyed the hike but enjoy the hunt much better later in the season. A few pics of the trip. I hunted my .270 colt. First time out on the new wood stock. Still light even with the bipod.

The big rock in the first pic is the backside of the mtn you see looking west from my place. The property is to the north of the piece we hunted. The deer seem to go and forth and I guessed wrong that day. It's a real bitch getting up to where I was. I may wait till the rut to do it again and hunt the others pots till then.

I took off work early and tried another spot. I only saw a few does. On the way back I had to wade thru a caravan of deer in the dark, picked the wrong draw again. Too dang warm anyhow. Shoulda went fishing.

Nothing exciting. I've been mostly spending my free time wiring the garage. I have gone out a few times after a short day at work. Still seeing does and a few small bucks. One two point I see every time out. I think he's beginning to recognize me as he doesn't pay much attention lately. The deer numbers are really down here this year but if we can get some snow and the rut going strong I still like my chances. I do have the last two weeks of the season off and plan to spend some time camping near Ovando. Hopefully get a elk, maybe see a whitetail if I haven't got a muley yet.

The rut is is on and I went out with high expectations today. I hoped to get my deer then off to Ovando for elk. I covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of deer in the usual places but mostly does and quite a few fork horns. I had a long walk back and my knee was sore so I headed back early and dropped down to the railroad tracks that lead back to my house. Almost literally across the river from the house a I saw a buck and a doe. The terrian is literally 90% cliffs with a few spots of steep sloped grass. It wasn't a large buck but it'd do and it'd be a real easy drag to the tracks, get the 4 wheeler and be done with it. Well it didn't quite work out that way. I walked down the tracks and kept watching the deer and they me. When they were to my immediate left, about 40 yards away I thought this is going to be easy. I shot, the deer sorta slumped upwards and I waited for him to tip over. He just stood there so I chambered another round and the trigger was jammed, the safety too I emptied the rifle and worked the bolt, dry fired, repeat, everything fine so I reload. The deer had disappeared, literally. I trudge up the very steep hill, I can't believe there is an escape route but there between the cliffs there is and I follow the very steep trail. Get another shot and the trigger is once again jammed tight It's too dark to really see much so I head back, this trail is mtn goat stuff. I'm just sick. I'll head back in the morning with a different rifle and my pack frame. I just can't believe he didn't go lay down and die. I'm hoping so. There isn't a whole lotta places for him to go up in that stuff so I'm optomistic. I just firmly believe he took a good hit as the shot felt good. We'll see tommorrow.

Keep an eye out near Ovando, I was over there two years ago and everywhere I went, I ran into bear sign. I got two does, around 5 miles NNE of Ovando, gut piles were cleaned up within a couple hours. I was just east of WMA there. Wardens say don't leave downed game overnight, if needed they will even help you get it out before dark.
Good luck on that deer also.

Robert, that's what I hear about the Bears. My wifes family sets up a camp up Monture creek so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've never hunted there before. It definately adds a bit of pucker factor gutting a animal as it's getting dark.
I looked high and low and no deer or sign. Maybe I just blew the shot, don't know and it bugs me. It was a intersting hike. Lots of cliffs but lots of pockets of grassy flats and deer everywhere. Other than cats it doesn't get any more secure than that place for a deer. I'll go out tomorrow and go through it again to try and erase all doubts.

I was on north side of Monture creek and west to WMA. There are closed roads in lower section that I was working. A Lot more snow then than now, bears and elk may still be higher. I had a cow tag so was hunting near WMA in 18" of snow. Saw a couple of calves but no cows.
I didn't get overly concerned, but when coming out last couple miles after dark, pucker factor is definitely there. My folks used to pack into the Bob 30yrs ago from there, they stoped because too many bears for them. They would find where bears would cut their tracks and follow them for mile or more. They decided they wanted to be the hunters not the hunted, after tracking down horses last time bear ran them off, they haven't been back. They used to spend a month or more back in there and enjoyed it. I never liked the 27 miles on a horse to get to camp.

I went out today, saw the buck but quite a ways off. Looked like he was moving normally. Good news. Leaving in the morning for elk. Will go out again when I get back.
Looks like a chance of snow and no moon now so hopefully...... Dark as dark gets tonight. Walked to my neighbors and the neighborhood deer let you get real close before they stand up. Sorta spooky even though I know it's them and not something else. All packed and ready to go. No .270 this trip, taking the 338-06 and .257 roberts. Probably a crime but I haven't hunted either yet so it's about time.
