 This is my father in laws gun, his fathers before that. It's in pretty tough shape, not really "restorable" so I'm  going to give it a face lift. New stock, nice rust blue and fill some holes in the action and maintain the rear peep.

Be great if that rifle could speak.  Lots of rugged miles.

Great stock blank.  Hope you keep the Lyman tang sight, adds lots of history, class and accuracy.

Is it a 303 S or a 300 S?  Both very usable cartridges.

nice family restoration project is F-I-L still alive and hunting?

Great rob, nice thing to do.

On guns like this I put a screw into the ugly tap hole, grind of the head and file to fit smooth.  When it is still slightly high, I hit it hard with a punch to sort of mushroom the top of the threaded piece, to cover any mouse holes in the thread/tap hole.  Then I file to match the contour and polish.  Shows only a slight ghost ring when blued.  I really don't trust me with a torch, I worked in the mills as a "burner".  I'm to wild to do anything like tig the hole.

a very nice rifle chambered for a fine tound. as you said it's seen some use, but i have a feeling it will come out looking like a true heirloom!

 I finally got my wood back from the duplicator...... It's always interesting to see how the wood comes out after shaping, especially slab sawn wood. This was an inexpensive blank and came out better than I anticipated. Now I can finally start in on

it.

  I started back in on this one. I had the holes filled that were tapped for a scope. I think it came out pretty good. I will get the lettering recut. I have the butt stock inletted and the butt plate pretty close. I had hoped to be done by now but it often doesn't work out that way.

 Finally fit the wood fitted, still a few hours left on the buttplate then I can get to the file and sand paper. The front piece took a long time. This gun has taken entirely to long and I'm glad to get it moving along. I just hope I don't have to wait a long to to get the lettering done.

 I picked up the metal, had it blued and the lever case colored. This project took a long time, didn't come out as well as I hoped but in the end it's a far sight better than it was.

Great job Rob.

I bet your inlaws will be impressed. That "Face Lift" should make it good for a couple more generations.
