This is my father in laws gun, his fathers before that. It's in pretty tough shape, not really "restorable" so I'm  going to give it a face lift. New stock, nice rust blue and fill some holes in the action and maintain the rear peep.

Be great if that rifle could speak.  Lots of rugged miles.

Great stock blank.  Hope you keep the Lyman tang sight, adds lots of history, class and accuracy.

Is it a 303 S or a 300 S?  Both very usable cartridges.

nice family restoration project is F-I-L still alive and hunting?

It's a 300, 1927 manufacture. I'm goin to keep the rear sight for sure. I hope the other holes can be tig'd shut and restore the lettering, checking into that. He is still alive and hunting. His father, late 90's, is still kicking too and pretty healthy. I hope to have it done so he can see it also.

Great rob, nice thing to do.

On guns like this I put a screw into the ugly tap hole, grind of the head and file to fit smooth.  When it is still slightly high, I hit it hard with a punch to sort of mushroom the top of the threaded piece, to cover any mouse holes in the thread/tap hole.  Then I file to match the contour and polish.  Shows only a slight ghost ring when blued.  I really don't trust me with a torch, I worked in the mills as a "burner".  I'm to wild to do anything like tig the hole.

I'm itching to start. I usually take my time and proceed as funds allow but I'm going to try and fast track this one. When I get my bonus I'm going to send the wood off to be turned. I'm trying to track down some original parts. The deep curved crescent plate was original on this one but replaced, I may look for one but think I'll go with the shotgun styled butt plate with the slight curve. I'm also thinking maybe a black walnut stock with nice feather crotch may fit this rifle better, still kicking it around. I think I may get some subtle engraving on the receiver as well. I really like these older 99's. Should be an experience as this is my first one.

I finally got my wood back from the duplicator...... It's always interesting to see how the wood comes out after shaping, especially slab sawn wood. This was an inexpensive blank and came out better than I anticipated. Now I can finally start in on

it.

I started back in on this one. I had the holes filled that were tapped for a scope. I think it came out pretty good. I will get the lettering recut. I have the butt stock inletted and the butt plate pretty close. I had hoped to be done by now but it often doesn't work out that way.

Finally fit the wood fitted, still a few hours left on the buttplate then I can get to the file and sand paper. The front piece took a long time. This gun has taken entirely to long and I'm glad to get it moving along. I just hope I don't have to wait a long to to get the lettering done.

Well it would appear stocks falling on the floor is catching. The butt stock hit the floor and has a nice crack. Pretty deflating after the all the labor. Expensive too, two piece stocks cost a lot to get turned. I'll use a english blank I have on hand. This project is turning from pleasure to work real quick. Shit happens though. At least this time I'll have a good pattern. I epoxied the crack and will use this set as the pattern. I can pay a extra fifty bucks to get it back in a few weeks. I could fix this and it'd hardly be noticeable but it would stand out like a sore thumb to me. I'd rather use it for firewood than see a hint of the repair every time I see this rifle.

I picked up the metal, had it blued and the lever case colored. This project took a long time, didn't come out as well as I hoped but in the end it's a far sight better than it was.

That's a real revelation to the rest of us fumble-fingered flock ups.  What great piece of craftsmanship!

Great job Rob.

I bet your inlaws will be impressed. That "Face Lift" should make it good for a couple more generations.
