Our Elk season opened on November 5th. We had cow tags in an area about 70 miles south of here.

I went out scouting a week before we went and found a couple groups of elk but not as many as I would have liked.

Opening morning we went straight to the place I saw a group of about 20 Elk. They were still there. The problem was they were just across the fence on private land. We went down farther along the Cheyenne river and saw a few deer but no Elk. When we were coming out the Elk had gotten spooked and we saw a group of about 10 on the public side of the fence. Game On.

We saw where they were headed and got in front of them. I was with a buddy from out of town so he had first shot. When they came by he shot at one and missed so we parked the truck and followed them about a half mile across a flat and up into a canyon.

We never saw that group again, but up the canyon about 500 yards was a group of three on a hillside. We snuck up to within 350 yards and my buddy took a shot from there.

He knocked down a pretty big cow in a place that wasn't ideal but not that bad. We spent the next few hours quartering it and packing it out. The pack out was about 3/4 mile.

The next day my daughter joined us and we saw a whole bunch of bulls but no cows that were on public land.

The next morning I set out with my daughter and about noon we found the elk. We found a group of over 100. They were on private land but within 50 yards of public land. We set up over a hill and I tried to call something to us. No luck. They took off but stayed on private.

After that we went across the road to a drainage that had some trees to check that out. We got close to the trees and saw about 10 elk and snuck up to about 100 yards.

This was my daughters first year to hunt so she got first shot. We made a plan that as soon as she shot I would shoot. She was shaking so much I am surprised she could even hold her rifle up. but after a few seconds she shot. It seemed like minutes. I take full responsibility for not getting out and practicing more with her last summer. but somehow she missed. They ran up a hill and stopped giving her another shot but this time they were right at 300 yards. she missed again. Dammit.

Anyway I got mine and it was almost dark when we got it quartered and packed out. This time it was only about 100 yards to the truck. It was getting dark so she started packing quarters as I was doing the quartering. We got it done right before dark.

It was a great time and we are going back this weekend to try again. She said she wanted to use my rifle just in case something was going on with her scope or something. I hope to be making another post next week with pictures of her elk.

The Swede now has an elk added to the growing list of animals I've harvested with it.

Great 2 for 3, pretty good guiding.

Still time for daughter to score, and if so she will appreciate it more knowing a shot isn't just meat.

Congratulations to all for what sounds like a good trip.  Tenting?

Thanks guys.

We were tenting. It was colder N a well diggers boots one night, but the other nights were not too bad. No snow.

We went back today and didn't see anything until about 30 minutes before sunset and they were on a hillside about a mile away. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have got to them before dark and definatly didn't want to pack one out in the dark.

We have time and are already planning on going back.

D,

The Swede is quickly becoming my go to hunting rifle. After seeing what it's done on the two antelope, one deer and now an elk I thing it is very capable of killing anything I will ever hunt.

Do you know what bullets Kristopher uses?

D,

I'm using 130 grain Sierra Gamechangers and am really impressed so far.

I might try a box of TTSX. I have heard good things about Barnes bullets.

The Hornady 123 gr SST is my go to bullet for the 6.5,  has a .501 Ballistic coefficient.

Deer and antelope combined 18 critters, all bang flop.  no runners.  It seems to work at ranges from 40 yards to 300+ yards.

It has been so good, doubt I'll ever change.

Changed the sight in yesterday to 100 yd deer range, 3 shots touching from the bench; and it was a very bad eye day for me.  Rifle can do much better.  My 300 Yard sight in before antelope hunt was 1.35 group at 300 yards.

Spent some time with some bullet designers on friday, just talking.  The Game Changer is Sierra's effort to duplicate the SST.  having not shot/tested them I could only contribute, that Sierra had picked a good Trademark name  -- Game Changer.  Just like the Creedmore  name...people were impressed with the name enough to buy somehting that wasn't any different/better tht the rest.

Thanks for the bullet info Bear. Who were the bullet designers? Or what company do they work for?

That's interesting because when I think about it, I have said some of the same things about the Gamechangers that you have been saying about the SST's

Yes Hank's then left.
