Fella's;
While at the range this morning I shot a couple of new to me .22's. Both were brand new, never been fired, purchases of an aquaintence of mine. The first was a Ruger 10/22 Target, laminated stock with a store mounted & bore sighted Simmons 8-point scope. The other was a Mag-Tech package with a BSA .22 special scope.
Scheel's did a good job of bore sighting the Ruger, the first round was on the x ring at 25 yards. The trigger was not very good though. There was quite a bit of travel that was gritty/creepy. The let off was around, guesstimate, three pounds, and no noticable overtravel. The trigger itself is a wide smooth type. The gun balanced well & was.of course,muzzle heavy. I was somewhat surprised to see 1" sling swivels on a gun this heavy. The 1.25's can't cost the factory that much more, and the wider sling would make carrying this gun much more comfortable. The scope adjustments were reasonably accurate & the glass was clear. Although we were shooting at about 45 degrees off the rising sun, there was no noticable flare or comma in the glass.
The Mag-Tech is sold at a store in town as a low-price bargain package. It is also a low quality package. Plastic stock, 10 round straight clip semi-auto. All functions are 'cheap'. The trigger was acceptable with a lot of take-up,but broke fairly cleanly. Accuracy at 25 yards was about 1" on a ten round group. The actual group was about .5" with 3 fliers that opened it up. This, however, may not be the gun's fault. The BSA .22 Special was indeed 'special'. I'll swear on a stack of bibles that I've seen better glass in the bottom of a Coke bottle. It exhibited a radial flare that reduced the clear viewing area by 30% at least.
Neither gun mis-fired or failed to function. The only ammunition used was what was purchased with each gun. Winchester Power Points with the Ruger & Federal American Eagle HP's with the Mag-Tech.
When the owner shot the Mag-Tech, I waited to see if he was going to comment on the scope. He didn't & I didn't want to prejudice him by commenting on it before he shot. I helped him sight-in & was glad to help out a new shooter.
