I have an old go kart that I drive my grandkids around the neighborhood on. It's an old frame from I guess the 60's. Kinda a piece of junk but we have so much fun riding it.
Anyway, The centrifical clutch is starting to go out. I'm looking at ordering a new one. The drive sprocket comes with the clutch as a unit. Originally, The go kart had a 5hp briggs and Stratten on it. When I replaced the engine I put an 11hp engine on it. It accelerates really well but the top end isn't quite as fast as I'd like. I haven't counted the teeth on the axle sprocket but I guess its around 80. I can count them if I need to. The drive sprocket has 9 teeth. I'm looking at clutches and they offer 9, 10, 12, or 14 tooth sprockets. How much bigger can I go and still be able to take off from a stop? I assume I have enough HP but don't know how much each sprocket will change the ratio. Any help would be appreciated. Wing master

How fast do you want it to go? Measure the drive tire around to find how many Inches it is. 63360" in a mile divide it out to fine how many times it has to turn to make a mile. Then use the calculator.

The teeth all work on the same chain links, so just measure the diameters of the sprockets. the teeth will be proportional to the diameter.
if you go to 10...you will get 10% higher top speed, with a 10% reduction in torque (starting/acceleration). If you go with a 12 you will get a 30 % increase in top speed, but a 30 % reduction in torque/acceleration. Remember as you go up in top speed, you lose torque and will get to the point were you don't have enought torque to push you to the top speed. That said I go with a 10 tooth. Also remember that 11 hp was when new it is probably less now. Also how fast do you want the kids to go???? especially when your weight isn't in the cart.

That's a pretty big change for only a tooth or two. I agree that I should go with the 10 tooth sprocket. 10% is quite a bit. According to me speedometer app it will top out at 23 MPH as it is now. That should be about right. Wing master
