The King's pump house Johnson just keeps giving.
This thing is 53 years old. I have been using bits and pieces for years on different projects. I sent the Cowl, dash, and seat to a guy I know in NY several years ago who was restoring one. I am down to just the front skis, track, Bogeys, and motor. When I first got it home I started it with either and lighter flued, just to see if it would that's been like 8 years ago. Only god knows when it actually ran last. I tried to get it to run this winter I got it to fire a little. I want to make a snow dog out of the track assembly and would like to have the OMC twin power it. There is like NO parts available for this thing. A guy can get old motors off eBay for parts but there old used parts. Mostly everything is in good shape and should run me for years in this application. I took apart the carb and cleaned it up everything looks fine. I need to make a primer for it apparently I sent it with the dash, I have a plan that should work coming. The stator, points, condenser all check out. It has TWO tractor like coils I would like to replace but there working for now. I did find new sparkplugs, the wires are wire and should work for another 50 years. It has decompressors on each cylinder to help pull start it I got them hooked back up and working. There is a difference when you pull on the rope, I suppose -20* and pulling for twenty minutes it would make a difference. it is a 20 hp two stroke. When I took it out I used the Sawzall and just whacked off the exhaust pipes, the only nubs now so it's a bit loud. WELL.
I think I tamed some of the noise. All the mufflers I could find where straight through glass packs and $50 each. SO I made one. I took two 10n Hp Lawnmower mufflers added some stull And, well It looks good I can't try it yet I had to take off the mounts and in the prosses of making new motor mount. Good looking muffler. Heavy might want some ceenter support mounting for the vibration.

The gas tank from the skee horse was mostly mush and crap in side, I got rid of it years ago. It was like 5 or6 gallon. I'm finding out why. At this point it drinks fuel like bear drinks Vodka. I have a tank off a riding lawnmower I'm going to use but it's just over a gallon, I'll have to carry a jerry can it looks like. I hope it get better as I get the motor running better. I did not know at the time but part of the priming system was with the tank. I got a push bulb primer like on a small motor, another can of worms but I think I got it debugged. The motor starts right up when you push 4 squirts of gas in to the crank case. But some times it runs fine and sounds strong , then other times It is so rich the gas runs out the muffler connections. Some times it does not keep running at all. Dang. I can't pull the rope and watch the fuel pump but with it getting to much gas I think its working. I checked the points, and replaced the plugs, the wires are wire and are not jumping to ground. I have fiddled around with the low and high speed adjustments, and go back to the starting point, not much difference. The needle valves and seat look ok. I did not take the "Reed" valves out, there delicate but, look ok from looking in to them. I did what I could, with the carb, but I cant figure out how to get the bowl off to check the float. I'm thinking it is my problem. Any insight? With out knowing the year for sure and the motor size I don't want to start buying parts and trying them. |

If you remember the color and style of the couwling, that will get you a close date/year.

I have down loaded three of them That are close.
69, 70, 71. but they all look different in the schematics. There was actually few motors in the skee horse. Every year had a different set up, it looks to me, and none I have found is anything like mine. I have tried the numbers on the tag to no avail.

I've worked on a number of Johnson outboards, rebuilt coils and carbs.
The carbs on the early ones had a central metering rod in the carb bowl (it was stepped with diffeent diameters. It was brass, if slight bend or gummed up it would not shut-off, and would leak fuel out of overflow holes in the top od the carb.. The rod held on to a cork carb float with a small SS horseshoe clip. those cork floats had a shellac, it gets rock hard over years and gas doen't disolve it. Same system used in model T fords...you remember those. wonder if todays E-10,E20 will disolve that shellac and then the cork takes on moistur/gas and doen't float high enough? I made one of those floats out of a thermos cork, then shellaced it...worked till I sole the motor in 2016. Just thoughts.

Some of those early Johnson gas tanks were pressurized. you pumpped them up and the pressure fed the gas to the carb. tanks were thick al or steel. later the squezze balla nd scavenged crankcase gas delivery were invented...I go back to the '50s.

Maybe Lizard will enlighten us with some of his wisdom here.
On motors not spreading his legs around something HOT!
I think he is a small motor expert or something. I can figure most things out but two stroke especially OLD two stroke motors are posed by devils' and demons.
