Perhaps this post would be better on the gunsmith page but a rifle is a rifle. I'm having trouble with my Savage NRA 19 .22 target rifle. From 25 yds it'll put 2 or 3 shots in the ten ring and then throw a flier 1/4" away. Then back to the 10 ring and another clear out in the seven ring. It has a cheapo 6-24 scope on it but when you move your head around behind it in a vise there is no hint of paralax. I'm not the worlds best shooter by any means. I have shot as high as 242 but not with this gun. My best round with it is 232 but averages more like 225. I'm wondering how important bedding is on a .22. The stock touches the RH side of the barrel but not the left. Since there is basically no pillar or recoil lug on a .22 how far up the barrel would you bed it? I'm planning to free float the barrel but am wondering if I should just bed the area around the barrel between the screws or 6" beyond the screws etc. Any advice? BTW I had Beertrucker and a couple of other guys try to shoot it with the same result. It seems to shoot flyers after moving to a new bull. If I shoot groups and stay on a practice bull it groups 'em right in there. Thanks, RD

i'm not well-versed w/ 22's... for the most part i have no use for them, but i do have a thought on bedding, or, what i would do... i would run the bedding out to where a loaded cartridge (including the tip of the bullet) reaches; from that point to the tang would be bedded.

i would try to really have the barrel free floating, and if that didn't work, a pressure pad, and finally, glass the barrel in...

good luck!

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

What ammunition are you useing? Can make a huge difference with .22s.

Rocky;

What Triggerguard says is gospel.  Ammo selection in .22's is the single best way to accuracy.  However, there are also a number of easy things to do that might help.  Dismount the action from the stock.  Is there a lot of left over 'hair' on the inside of the stock?  If so, get rid of it.  Bedding an action against it just lets things move around.  I'd also make sure the barrel is free floated.

You might want to clean the barrel out, they get fouled pretty easy if you start going through many rounds.  Many comp. shooters lap theirs, I would hit it with some JB bore cleaner after a good amount of rounds.  As far as bedding, heck it can't hurt, just use the left overs from bedding a different rifle, you or someone who does bed theirs usually has some left over.
