   Over a lifetime I've learned, if the battery is weak get rid of it.
Woke up this morning and it is 8 oF, still no snow.  But the SUV started right up.  Spent last week in Florida Keys, with SUV parked in open parking garage in below 20 oF.  At a cold windy reurn at 10 pm, she started right up (150K). New battery put in Sept 15th.

I always think batteries in September.  While they have gone up 30% last yer, alongg with toilet paper, still a bargain.

Put in fall batt, enjoy winter.

	New batteries don't get week. They work then they DON'T work simple no warning. We have a Lithium battery on order for the boat, You have to get a special converter for the charging system if you want the boat motor to charge it. AND you can't mix them with lead or Glass mat batteries. We will use it for the trolling motor/lights/fox pro.

	Li ion works great til it drains down a bit, the. Dies instantly. Like a cordless drill. Biggest benefit is weight savings and linear power, not longevity. Gels have unreal initial amps for cold cranking diesel engines but it’s short lived and like the Li’s, no warning or ability to low crank.

	I have replaced thousands, literally, of batteries in the almost 23yrs of working on engines. For the money you can't beat GOOD lead acid batteries. Exide, Interstate, Deka, etc. I Despise wet cells (NiCad). They are very expensive and even more expensive to get rid of. They are typically used in stationary generator sets. The gels, Ions, etc are all good until they go to hell. Now you have to find another one, sometimes out in the middle of nowhere and you can't just put another lead acid in cause your charging system won't charge it. Buy a good lead acid battery and keep track of it. The first time it hesitates to start you engine replace it!

On my boat I have two batteries with cross-over switches. I replace one evryother year, rotation, lead acid. It is impossible to not use lit ion batteries in small electronics. But they are an explosive hazzard. over-charge, short them out, or punccture...big bang. Coast Guard now requires that boat batteries have rubber insulated terminal covers on BOTH pos and neg.

	I agree Maplehill. All I have ever used is lead acid batteries. I usually get around 8 years out of them. At the first sign of a dragging starter I replace it. I haven't been stranded yet. Wing master

	In my business Caterpillar recommends replacing LA batteries every 3yrs. So, I replace hundreds of batteries and end up with a bunch of 4D and 8D Cat batteries. Cat batteries are made by New Penn Manuf. (Deka) they are top of the line. I end up giving them to guys with equipment and they last forever. I put one on our sawmill engine, a little Case 4cyl diesel engine, probably 15yrs ago. It sits all year, wasn't used for probably 5 or 6yrs at all, still cranks the little engine to this day without issue. Good batteries are worth the premium.
