Brake
Out
Another
Thousand.
Had the "improved" waterbug out for more testing.
WAY better than the last disappointing test,BUT.
Not there yet. I beginning to think It will NEVER be "there".
Boat to heavy, to small, and not enough HP.
We planed to use it anyway today as it is, It would handle OK but only around 12 mph at full rpm of 4300.
We planned to run the shore line slow and shoot carp.
Would have worked too but we broke a drive chain.
Had to "pole" back and load up and go,Dang it.
I have it under the boat port at home rethinking the whole project...

Thoughts.  I know you had your heart set on a cat.  But have you thought of having some al welded into the space between.
Better floatation, less drag, shallow draft, increased speed.

Just thoughts from an engineer that is around the bend.

And, if I did that I would have another 4 feet added to the length too.
Then a 200 HP snowmobile motor.Clap

Don't know yet.
Maybe a surface drive, and do away with the air prop.Ouch

Sometimes I throw good money after bad, but I really think you have too much time money and energy in this project to give up.

I kinda like the 200 hp snowmobile engine idea. I'm thinking it should be about the same size as the VW engine with a whole lot more power. Maybe a few more RPM's too.

Do you think you could use the cintrifucal clutch? That might be a good thing. And maybe a belt instead of a chain drive?

Just thoughts

You have give this a noble effort D. I think you are past the point of no return now. The snowmobile powerplant seems like it would work. Actually, the whole drivetrain, at least the engine and clutch assemblies. The problem you have now is engineering it into the package. I'm afraid you'll have a bundle (more) wrapped up in it. An engine of that size and power, that is reliable enough to count on, is not gonna be cheap. I have not paid alot of attention to snowmobiles in a long time, but I think Yamaha was the only one making a 4-stroke engine with that kind of output, there maybe more doing it now. The 4-strokes are bigger, but you won't have to worry about the oil injection system and they are quieter.

You all remember I started with a snowmobile drive right...Ouch
RPM Is not the issue The prop limits how fast it can turn, just have to change the ratio to get whats needed.
Hill have you heard a 64" prop turn? The noise from the motor is nothing.
A two stroke is a LOT lighter and may be air cooled a plus when your running a frozen lake and no way to get water to cool.
Even with a surface drive I'd keep the boat, could not run on ice, or the parking lot.

I forgot you started with a snowmobile engine. I guess noise isn't an issue! How big was the engine you had on it first? An air cooled 2 stroke are usually not that big, maybe 550cc? And they have radiators to cool them on a snowmobile, so that can work for your boat. I had a 1998 Indy Ultra, 700cc triple that was wicked fast. I could keep the skis off the snow past 90mph. I'm not sure what the HP was but I'm sure it was well shy of 200. The power to weight ratio of a liquid cooled 2 stroke is phenomenal. What engine did you have to start?

Just thinking???   how important is speed?

does it have enough 'push' to plow thru some mud?

Your officially retired, so an extra 20 minutes to getto back water wouldn't matter that much.

just thoughts.

Hill I started with the bug motor just the drive off an old Johnson snow horse. A 550 cc is around 36 HP with out any supercharging.
A new injected supercharged 800 cc is normally a little over 150 hp I here.
Bear pushing with air need some momentum.
From my understanding to get a boat to move not on water is one HP per every 6 pounds (Boat and load), to KEEP it moving it goes down to 1 to 4 pounds.
At that rate, I'd need just shy of 200 hp.
All that said slick paint helps and if you wiggle it to get it sliding all so helps. My strips of Poly don't help they multiply presser per square inch wise. This is from the Airboat guys in Florida.

The ones I've ridden in Florida and Georga all 'stick' to the mud a good bit.

On some of my small low power boats (20-30-40 HP) I've used "racing bottom paint".  When dry if you wet your hand and wipe it, it feels like liquid soap is on the surface.  It is somewhat brittle, and doesn't like scraping rocks.

I do know in the mud boat we use gator glide.
You can slide over/through the mud but cant pick the boat up because of the suction. Frog spit I here is good too.
