The title was going to be "Best deer cartridge" but that is so over done, no one would read it.

But on another forum site, that was the question, and I think the 7x57 has  it as best.

Why?  it has an adequate heavy bullet, a flat trajectory, like recoil for accuracy.  works short and long range.

just rambling.

6.5 Swede...
The problem is no one tries them. It's all about new and or AR rounds...

Right on D.
All present day rifle stuff is about ARs.  and since ARs don't shoot manly cartridges, the 6.5, 7x57,8x57, 9.3x62 are not in todays picture.

I did notice that Wingmaster got a new custom built 6.5 Swed...probably got the fever from you.

Funny you post this Bear. I am waiting for a new (to me) Model 70 Featherweight in 7X57. I saw it at a show a few weeks ago and thought about it and called the guy and made a deal. Should be here tomorrow. The "perfect" round is hard to quantify, for me it is more about the rifle it is in as there are so many very very good performing cartridges. I would be hard pressed to look past the 308, 280 is also a favorite of mine, which is just a tad more round than the 7X57. But for me it's all about the rifle. Weight, how it hangs, how it shoots and generally how it feels in my hands.

I;m sure you will love the new rifle.  In 1978, I bought a Ruger no 1 in 7x57...handles perfect, comfortable tto shoot

My version of the 7x57 is a pair of 7mm-08's. One LH Bolt gun & one BLR-81 lever gun.

IBD, I think those will do just fine. I have the 7mm rem mags and other then a little louder and a bit more whack, the 7's are a good choice down to the 7-30 and all the way back up to the Weatherbeys. 6.5's are better for stretchin flat and 30's hit harder. The 7's just fit better for all around.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

7x57 is a good deer cartridge, as are a lot of others.
Deer aren't that hard to kill.

But the BEST is and has been a 270 WCF !!!

recently asked to evaluate the 27 Nosler.  I compared it to the 270 Winchester, which is nearly 100 years old.

The 27 requires a 26 inch barrel to get close to its published velocity, and 20 % more powder.  I think a 270 win with a 26 inch barrel and + P pressure loads is very close.

I agree that the 6.5 Swede is about as good as it gets.

Another one that I have been impressed with is the .257 Roberts. Last week I took my daughter on her first antelope hunt. She shot a buck at 205 yards with her Winchester Featherweight .257 Roberts and it dropped right where it stood.

Her twin sister has the same rifle and has killed everything from antelope to elk with it.

All mentioned I would consider excellent deer cartridges. I have 7mm08, (another to be done at Hart very soon), 284, 280, 7mmRem mag and 7mmWby mag and soon to have a 7X57, I like the 7mms. Also have a Mdl 70 Ftwt in 6.5X55 and a couple 257 Rbts.  The mags I would consider more than needed for our eastern hunting, but fit the extended ranges seen out west quite nice. The difference in the 7-08, 7X57, 280 and 284 are miniscule to the average hunter, like I said, depends on the rifle you're carrying.

The advantage of the 7-08 and 284, over the 7x57 and the 280, is that both the 7-08 and the 284 can fit on a short action were the others need a longer action.  So lots of folks will like the handling of the 7-08 and 284 rifles.  that difference is only 5/8 inch in a bolt rifle, but does make a difference in handling.

The 284 doesn't fit very well in a short action, much better suited for a LA. But, it was designed for a SA. The real world differences in performance are near impossible to notice in any of them
