Topic: .22lr Loooooooong Shots Posted: 01 July 2003 at 13:53 |

I am a .22 nut. I waste a lot of time seeing what I can do with them. So, I am wondering what kind of distances have you guys shot at SERIOSLY with your .22's. I don't mean for benchrest accuracy, and definately NOT hunting, but plinking. I was just out trying some long shots, I'll say how long after a bit.

BKC;
The Missouri river range here has a gong at about 318 yards. It's about 30" - 36" in diameter. I won't ring it first shot, or every shot, but I will ring it with a .22lr.

Cb, very close. I set up a piece of aluminum, about 30" x 40" at 300 yards. It is a lot of fun. I tried a rapid fire with my 550 semi and was a little less than 50%. With my Rom M69 I was about 75%. I tried a target at 300 and was too ashamed to even bring it back down.

bk, if you really want to see what you (should read "You") can do with a .22, start shooting NRA small bore silhouette. All shots are from the standing. and before each match you have to take the benches from the line. I recently shot a head plate (6" in dia) from 200 meters in Memphis Tennessee from the off hand. A lot of guys say that I am "queer" for .22's since I own about 15 of them, all high grade models, Winchester 52's, 40-X's, and Anschutz's, but I don't prefer the low grade stuff............Kingpin

I had a Gallery pump for a few years that I put a tang sight on, that I got from Dixie Gun Works. It would go up to about 325 yards pretty well, as long as the wind wasn't playing too many tricks.

my most favorite shot w/ a 22... my brother and i were out screwing around. happened upon a field that was just loaded w/ jackrabbits... we found some that we lasered at 125 yards. (earlier that day i took $20 from my brother on an 85 yard crow from offhand w/ iron sights). $20 went onto the truck hood, my brother leaned across and took forever to squeeze it off... at the shot, the jack jumped up clearing the 4-strand barbed wire fence he was next to, landed, and came screaming across the snow right at us... he crossed the ditch, ran onto the road crossing just feet in front of us, down into the other ditch, and when he reached the middle of the ditch, he just tipped over.
i'm thinking there's no way he made that shot, and that rabbit ran that far... so, we skinned him just to see if there was indeed a hole...so, he won his $20 back...
but you guys and your 2 and 300 yard shots... no, not me. i have enough trouble getting my centerfires to do that!

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

22 Rimfires can be amazingly accurate, even at distances they were never designed for. Many, Many years ago, I had a 51K Mossberg that I used to harass the gophers, magpies, starlings etc with. It was a fairly accurate 22, so I mounted an old B4 Weaver scope on it. One day when my dad and I were in the back yard, a Starling left the cherry tree and flew across the field, landing on the very top of a big fir tree at least 200 yards distant. I said to my dad: "Watch me, I'm going to shoot that Starling." He just laughed and replied: "You won't even scare him at this distance." I aimed that old Mossberg, lifted the muzzle an amount I thought appropriate, and touched one off. Imagine the surprise for both of us when that Starling tipped off that treetop and dropped like a stone! I know it was a fluke, but I have shot some groups at 200 yards with my 541T on a quiet day that measured under 3", mostly vertical spreads. Regards, Eagleye

Kingpin,
I was practicing silhouette when I got the idea. I was doing 100 at a ram sized chunk of the same aluminum. I wouldn't brag as much if it were off the bench. I actually measured it and the viewable part is 25" wide x 35" tall. Not fantastic, but a lot of fun. The ping is surprisingly very loud. I also have a 12x12 piece of heavy gauge sheet steel set up at 200 yards I freehand at. Too much time, not anough ammo!

Guess this'll do,
I have a Marlin 39a, made in the early 60's. My dad hand checker'd it when he was a kid. Anyway, buddy of mine set down a pickle in a lane an we paced off a 100yds. Shot it dead center with the first shot, but I was using standin shootin free hand with iron sites. Still have this gun after 25 years.

Spot & all;
I always have wanted one of the Marlin 39 Mounties. Straight stock, carbine barrel. Trouble is, everybody else wants one too I guess. Saw a Marlin 39 cowboy recently at the gun show. Same as the Mountie except an octogon rifle barrel. New price on that one was $699.00. Gonna be awhile on the Marlin .22.
